Through six games faceoffs have been much improved for Sean Couturier

In his first two seasons in the NHL the faceoff dot has not been kind to Sean Couturier, but perhaps he is beginning to turn the corner in 2013-2014. In his rookie season Couturier took the third most faceoffs on the team at 804, trailing Claude Giroux and Danny Briere, but he won only 47% of them. That placed him at a cool 71st in the league among all forwards that qualified. The sophomore campaign actually proved to be worse as he took 553 draws (remember, it was a shortened season), only trailing Giroux in attempts, but he only won …

The Philadelphia Flyers fired coach Peter Laviolette after a loss last Sunday to the Carolina Hurricanes. They promoted Craig Berube to head coach. Since then, they are 1-2-0, as they beat the Florida Panthers on Tuesday, but lost to the Phoenix Coyotes and the Detroit Red Wings, and have scored just five goals in that span. Berube wants to institute a more defensively conscious system, with emphasis on positional play, puck support, all while playing an uptempo, skating heavy game. Detroit’s power play hurts Flyers, Philly loses 5-2

The Philadelphia Flyers lost for the fifth time this season tonight in Detroit, as they lost to the Red Wings by the count of 5-2. Niklas Kronwall had a goal and two assists and Henrik Zetterberg had two goals and one assist, while Daniel Alfredsson had three helpers in the win for Detroit. Jimmy Howard stopped 32 shots for the win, while his team produced three goals on the power play.
