2013 Draft Eligibles: Is it Philly or Bust for Valeri Nichushkin?

Ever since Evgeni Malkin entered the league the bar for Russian prospects has been set. His combination of size, speed and stickhandling is something the NHL hasn’t seen, and will not see again. There is only one Evgeni Malkin. Scouts love to make lofty comparisons and envision improbable similarities with young talent. The top Russian talent in the upcoming 2013 NHL Draft is Valeri Nichushkin. The 6’3” 201-pound right-winger is the number two-rated international skater in the final Central Scouting rankings. Nichushkin burst onto the International scene during last year’s WJC in Ufa, Russia. With Team Russia in danger of …

Rumors and Rumblings! Incoming Alex Pietrangelo offer sheet?

Did it come as a surprise to anyone that the first rumor regarding the Philadelphia Flyers involves upgrading a defense that has struggled the majority of the season?  The Flyers defense was plagued with injuries and inconsistency throughout the year, resulting in just their second missed playoff appearance in 18 seasons. According to Tim Panaccio of CSNPhilly.com, another offer sheet could be in the Flyers’ offseason plans.  This year’s target could be Alex Pietrangelo of the St. Louis Blues.  The 23-year-old defenseman is on the final year of his entry level contract and is due for a major raise. Panaccio states, …

Ilya Insanity: On Sleepgate, Blousegate, and the Over-Sensationalized News

Ask a Flyers fan who they think the most controversial player on the team is, and it’s likely that all of them will say Ilya Bryzgalov. But is Bryz really all that controversial? And even if he is, what’s the big deal? We all laughed about getting Bryzgalov once we saw that great YouTube video back from when he was with the Anaheim Ducks, when he asked a reporter why they heff to be mad. We were so excited to have the funny Russian guy on our team. And then he had a lackluster first season – save for some …

Then and Now: Randy Jones

Randy Jones joined the Philadelphia Flyers’ organization for the 2003-2004 campaign. After he totaled 53 points in 68 games with Clarkson University over the 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 seasons, Jones participated in a combined 60 games with the Flyers and the Philadelphia Phantoms in the season before the lost year of 2004-2005. Jones played in just five games with the Flyers during the 2003-2004 season, as he failed to record a point and was plus-1 in his stretch with the Orange and Black. He suited up in five games from March 6th to March 27th, as Philly went 2-3-0 when …

2013 Draft Eligibles: Buyers beware of the Crosby comparison for Nathan MacKinnon

The argument over the top prospect in this year’s draft has been going on for over a year now and will continue up until draft day most likely. As hockey fans know it centers on Halifax Mooseheads center Nathan MacKinnon, Portland Winterhawks defenseman Seth Jones and MacKinnon’s teammate in Halifax, Jonathan Drouin. Seth Jones is my number one overall prospect followed by Drouin and then MacKinnon. Some people may call me crazy for having MacKinnon at number three. Everyone knows that he’s a potential franchise player in the NHL with all the tools to succeed at the next level. However, …

Around the Net April 30, 2013: Birthday edition

Welcome to Around the Net, a weekly look through linkage at the Philadelphia Flyers and other news from around the NHL. Just a quick note, today is my birthday. Don’t ask me how old I am, just know this, I was 27 days old, the last time the Flyers won the Stanley Cup, so it’s been awhile. The young man on top of today’s blog is Shea Theodore, ranked number eleven by North American Central Scouting. He is a left handed defenseman, read more about him here: [NHL.com] Clean out day thoughts I hate clean out day, now we have …

2013 NHL Playoffs

Flyers Faithful Staff Playoff Predictions

Whelp, it’s playoff time and unfortunately the Flyers are not participating this year. While some people may be able to temporarily adopt a team during the playoffs, others need more useless methods of fabricating fandom…such as predictions. So here we go! Marcello De Feo  This is a weird season and I expect the topsy turvy nature of the season to continue throughout the playoffs. Western Conference Chicago 3 Minnesota 4 Predators fans further lament the loss of Ryan Suter, who helps lead the Wild over the Blackhawks in a stunning upset until the draft comes around, the Preds draft a …

Flyers hold 11th spot in the 2013 Entry Draft

The National Hockey League held its annual draft lottery tonight in Toronto. The lottery system allows the teams with the worst records a real chance at improving.  This year will mark the first time that all 14 of the non-playoff teams will have a shot at winning the first pick.  Basically it breaks down like this:  the worse the record of the team, the more likely the chance that they win the first-overall pick. The team with the worst record in the NHL this season, the Florida Panthers, had a 25 percent chance of winning the lottery.  Other teams …

Homer sez (once and for all) Laviolette’s staying; more Flyers heading to Worlds

He said it angrily. He said it calmly. The meaning didn’t change. Paul Holmgren reaffirmed the fact that Peter Laviolette will remain behind the bench next season for the Philadelphia Flyers. Exit interviews conducted team-wide back at their practice facility in Voorhees on Sunday, following Saturday’s season-ending 2-1 win at Ottawa revealed little scoop in that area, despite rumor and speculation that Laviolette’s job was in jeopardy after missing out on the playoffs. “Peter Laviolette’s the coach. I don’t know where all this crap came from,” said the perturbed GM at the mandatory presser. “I don’t know who your sources …

2013 Draft Eligibles: Sweden well represented once again; Lindholm, Wennberg, Burakovsky, de la Rose, Haag

Since the year 2000, there have been 29 Swedish born-and-bred players selected in the first round of the NHL draft — the highest number of those coming in 2009 with seven players selected overall. (Victor Hedman, TB, #2 overall, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, PHX, #6, Magnus Paajarvi, EDM, #10, David Rundblad, STL, #17, Jacob Josefson, NJ, #20, Tim Erxion, CGY, #23 and Marcus Johansson, WSH, #24). Last year, only two players were selected in the first round. If you recall, the Anaheim Ducks plucked defenseman Hampus Lindholm fourth overall from Rögle Bandyklubb and the Washington Capitals selected Filip Forsberg 13th overall from …
