Penguins Finally Beat Flyers At CONSOL Energy Center 4-2

Today’s game may have not meant much in the standings, but the Flyers could have done two things in their 4-2 road loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins: remain perfect at the CONSOL Energy Center and keep Evgeni Malkin from reaching the 50-goal mark. Philly failed to do either, as Brayden Schenn and Jaromir Jagr tallied in the loss that dropped the Flyers’ record to 47-26-9 for the 2011-2012 regular season. “Wasn’t a good game, no question about it from both sides,” Jagr said. “You might have to face them seven times the next two weeks. The loss, as well as Malkin’s …

Grossmann rewarded with contract extension

It took exactly 49 days from the time Paul Holmgren pried Nick Grossman(n) away from the Dallas Stars until he proved himself worthy enough to be considered part of the Philadelphia Flyers for the long term. That’s why it certainly is a Good Friday for the 27-year-old Swedish defenseman, who was able to agree to terms on a multi-year contract extension this afternoon. Multiple reports state it’s a four-year pact valued at $14 million. Acquired on February 16, the man listed at 6-foot-3, 227-pounds but who plays much bigger has been a stabilizing influence on a corps rocked by Chris …

Flyers honor season’s best

Prior to Thursday’s 2-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres, the Flyers paused as they do for the final home game of every season to honor the best players in several categories. The “Gene Hart Memorial Award” is a relatively new honor, first given out in 2007 and granted to the player judged to have the best rapport with fans. It is the lone honor chosen by the fans, as the team’s fan Board of Directors gets to choose. Wayne Simmonds is certainly deserving, for his efforts in the community and overall genial personality. Yanick Dupre Class Guy Award, given to …

Flyers Beat Sabres, Begin Playoffs At Pittsburgh

For the second straight season, the Flyers had a hand in ending the Buffalo Sabres’ hopes to win the Stanley Cup, as Philadelphia beat the Northeast Division club 2-1 tonight at the Wells Fargo Center. Matt Read produced the game-winning goal late in the third period, while Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 25-of-26 shots for his first win since March 24. Read carried the puck through the neutral zone and blew by Robyn Regehr at the Sabres’ blue line before he headed towards Ryan Miller all alone. As he moved left-to-right, Read remembered Miller’s poke check from earlier in the contest and released a shot before …

A Look Back at the Chris Pronger Trade

It was June 26, 2009. I was sitting in a Chinese buffet at the Plymouth Meeting Mall as my phone began to vibrate: CSN ALERT: Flyers trade F Joffrey Lupul, D Luca Sbisa, 2009 1st round pick, 2010 1st round pick, and a conditional 3rd round pick in 2010 or 2011 to Anaheim for D Chris Pronger and F Ryan Dingle. Immediately, I jumped up and exclaimed, “THE FLYERS GOT RYAN DINGLE!” Of course I began getting in touch with family members and hockey friends — not to discuss the bounty the Flyers gave up to trade for the All-star, …

Atlantic Watch: 3/28-4/3

In their four-game schedule this week, the Flyers posted a record of 2-1-1 and picked up what might be there most intense victory of the 2011-2012 regular season with their win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday. It’s those same Pens that the Flyers trail by three points for fourth in the conference and the chance for home-ice advantage in the clubs’ first-round playoff series. The Orange and Black still have a shot for fourth, but they’ll need to beat a team fighting for their playoff lives along with the Pens this week. The Broad Street Bullies started off the week with …

Good News/Bad News

First, the good news… Ilya Bryzgalov was rightfully honored for the tear he’d been on for the last month,   named this morning as the National Hockey League’s First Star for the month of March. Penguins Get Calls, Flyers Win 6-4 In Pitt

In a game of importance for home-ice advantage in the opening round of the playoffs, the Philadelphia Flyers walked into Pittsburgh today and left with a 6-4 victory. “We haven’t talked about home-ice or the Rangers, or the Penguins or the Senators. We talked about the two points. That’s really all we can control right now,” said Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette. “Eventually we’ll either have home-ice or we won’t.” Not only did they move to within one point of the Pens in the standings, the visitors overcame numerous non-calls from the officials and drew an end-of-the-game line brawl and hissy …

Spezza, Alfredsson Lead Sens To Shootout Win In Philly

Despite a three-goal deficit after the first 20 minutes, the Flyers were still able to earn a point in their 4-3 shootout loss to the Ottawa Senators on Saturday afternoon. After Philly scored three goals in the second period to tie the game, the Sens won the shootout thanks to goals from Milan Michalek and Jason Spezza. Spezza, Daniel Alfredsson and Chris Neil tallied for the Senators, who moved four points ahead of eighth-place Washington. Craig Anderson turned in a superb performance, making 36 saves and rescuing his club from the prospect of taking only one point away. “Our team …

Flyers Leading Semi-Charmed Kind Of Life, Roll Over Leafs 7-1

Brayden Schenn and Wayne Simmonds combined for four of the Flyers’ goals tonight, as they handled the Toronto Maple Leafs for a 7-1 win on the road. Sergei Bobrovsky ended a personal four-game losing streak with a 16-save performance for his first win since early February. Since Jonas Gustavsson got hurt in warm-ups to tonight’s game, Jussi Rynnas made his first NHL start. Unfortunately for Rynnas, the Flyers offense lit him up. Following a pair of goals in each of the first two periods, the Orange and Black put home three tallies in the final 20 minutes for their second three-goal …
