Game 39 Preview: Philadelphia Flyers @ Vancouver Canucks

Philadelphia Flyers (18-16-4) @ Vancouver Canucks (23-11-6), 10:00pm, CSN-Philly/SNET-P After they edged out a shootout decision against a familiar face on Saturday night, the Philadelphia Flyers look to make it two straight road wins and three straight overall when they take on the Vancouver Canucks tonight. Although the Canucks will be without Roberto Luongo and a few other key players, the Pacific Division club is 10-1-1 over their last 12 games and are 6-0-0 at home in December. It goes without saying the Orange and Black can’t have the start they had in Edmonton, as Steve Mason saw Taylor Hall …

Paul Holmgren

Mid-season grade on Holmgren’s 2013-2014 offseason moves

Back on July 5, the first day of free agency, I wrote an article praising Paul Holmgren for his offseason acquisitions. A couple of months later, the Flyers signed Matt Read to an extension, which I felt desired even further praise. Now that we are 38 games into an 82 game season, I wanted to take a look back at each of this past offseason’s moves and see how they have fared until this point. 1) Mark Streit – 4 years $5.25 million cap hit The Flyers traded for the rights of the impending unrestricted free agent and signed him to …

Why you heff to be mad? Raffl caps off Flyers’ shootout win against Bryzgalov, Oilers

Ilya Bryzgalov failed in the shootout yet again in his career, but this time it’s a good thing for the Philadelphia Flyers, as the Orange and Black grabbed two points in a 4-3 decision against the Edmonton Oilers on the road. Claude Giroux and Michael Raffl beat Bryzgalov in the shootout, while Wayne Simmonds recorded another multi-goal performance. The captain and Jakub Voracek each provided two-assist games, while Taylor Hall had the lone multi-point performance for the Oilers in the loss. Steve Mason stopped 13 of 16 for the win, while Bryzgalov stopped 35 shots in the loss. The shootout …

Game 38 Preview: Philadelphia Flyers @ Edmonton Oilers

Philadelphia Flyers (17-16-4) @ Edmonton Oilers (13-24-3), 10:00pm, CSN-Philly/CBC Ilya Bryzgalov may have called it “just another game,” but you have to wonder if the Philadelphia Flyers will look at the contest in the same way. If it wasn’t for the acquisition of Bryzgalov the Flyers wouldn’t have Sean Couturier, Jakub Voracek, Wayne Simmonds, or Brayden Schenn and still have Mike Richards and Jeff Carter. The Russian goaltender was the reason Paul Holmgren made his bold decisions on June 23, 2011. Whether you agree with Holmgren’s decisions or not, these transactions were made to acquire a goalie that was supposed …

2014 Draft Eligibles: Kootenay’s Sam Reinhart continues the family tradition

Sam Reinhart has been one of the more recognizable names in the WHL for quite a while now. The former 15th overall pick in the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft has been a force since joining the Kootenay Ice full time as a 16-year old in the 2011-12 season. Currently, Reinhart is projected to be the number one overall pick in June’s draft in Philadelphia, but he’s also expected to play a prominent role for Team Canada starting today as the 2014 World Juniors get underway in Malmo, Sweden. If you’re just a casual hockey fan, you may not know that …
