Rumors and Rumblings! Incoming Alex Pietrangelo offer sheet?

Did it come as a surprise to anyone that the first rumor regarding the Philadelphia Flyers involves upgrading a defense that has struggled the majority of the season?  The Flyers defense was plagued with injuries and inconsistency throughout the year, resulting in just their second missed playoff appearance in 18 seasons. According to Tim Panaccio of CSNPhilly.com, another offer sheet could be in the Flyers’ offseason plans.  This year’s target could be Alex Pietrangelo of the St. Louis Blues.  The 23-year-old defenseman is on the final year of his entry level contract and is due for a major raise. Panaccio states, …

Rumors and Rumblings: Brent Burns on the blue line?

With the trade deadline less than a week away, the rumor mill is kicking into full gear.  According to Frank Seravalli of the Daily News, Paul Holmgrem has reported interest in Brent Burns of the San Jose Sharks. Seravalli states “After Sharks GM Doug Wilson unloaded defenseman Douglas Murray to Pittsburgh on Monday, many pointed toward veteran blue liner Dan Boyle and linked him to the Flyers.  Turns out, Boyle was simply the red herring. Instead, the Flyers’ brass wanted a closer look at Brent Burns, among others” Brent Burns would be a welcome addition to the Philadelphia Flyers’ blue line, but …

Rumor mill: Dan Boyle and, yet again, Bobby Ryan

The most glaring hole on this Philadelphia Flyers roster is the lack of a true number one defenseman.  According to Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal and Tim Panaccio of CSNPhilly.com, Dan Boyle is on the trade block and the Philadelphia Flyers are interested. “If, however, the San Jose Sharks are willing to trade the 36-year-old Boyle, who has a year left on his six-year, $40 million contract with a whopping $6.6 million cap hit, the Flyers have interest” Panaccio wrote. And Matheson stated, “He’d be excellent in Philadelphia, where the Flyers are crying for offence, but again, his age …

The Cap impacts and “recapture” risks of the Luongo rumor

Before I even begin to get into any financials, I’d like to first point out that I do not personally think there is any merit to rumors involving Roberto Luongo getting traded to the Flyers. I don’t think it makes much sense at all. If Bryzgalov is a long term risk, so is Luongo. With that said, there were some rumblings in the Twitter world from some respected people. Despite some denials, the tweet earlier from @enricociccone is accurate. The Flyers are interested in Roberto Luongo. — james duthie (@tsnjamesduthie) January 10, 2013   Paul Holmgren going in on Luongo big …

Shea It Ain’t So!

The Philadelphia Flyers tried to add one of the best defensemen in the NHL to the roster by signing restricted free agent Shea Weber to a 14 year, $110 million offer sheet. Their hopes were dashed on Tuesday when the Nashville Predators announced their decision to match the Flyers’ offer. The Predators had until 11:30 pm Wednesday to match the Flyers’ offer. If they had decided against it, they would have received four first-round draft picks as compensation. It was speculated that, had they not elected to match, they could have arranged a trade with the Flyers using those draft …

Flyers acquire Versteeg

The Philadelphia Flyers acquired forward Kris Versteeg from the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday evening in exchange for two draft picks. Heading to the top club in the Eastern Conference is the 24-year-old winger who tallied 14 goals and 35 points in 53 games for the struggling Maple Leafs this season. Going to Toronto are first-and-third round picks in the 2011 draft. “Kris is an exciting young forward. He’s 24 years old and he’ll fit in with our group of players here,” said Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren. “He’s a quality forward that can play in a lot of different …
