Crashing the Crease: Steve Mason, Expectation and Reality

Through the first seven games of the 2013-2014 Philadelphia Flyers season, the early storyline in the Philadelphia crease has been the rise of Steve Mason. The 25 year old has earned 5 starts to Emery’s 2 and looked good in the process, posting a 2.23 GAA and .926 SV%. He may have a record of 1-4, but the mood in Philadelphia surrounding the promising young goaltender is almost unanimously positive. Hundreds of thousands of alumni (including myself) returned to State College last weekend for one of the most thoroughly entertaining homecoming weekends in recent memory. First, their was the time honored tradition of the homecoming parade Friday night. Thousands of alumni, students, and families decked from head to toe in their blue and white lined the streets of Penn State’s campus and College Ave. downtown to watch the decorated floats of different student organizations and Greek Life march on by. 6 games into the 2013-14 NHL season and Flyers captain, Claude Giroux, has only registered one assist. That is because he has forgotten how to score.
