Scott Laughton is not Sean Couturier, and maybe he shouldn’t stay with the Flyers

Any minute now word should trickle down about whether Scott Laughton will be staying with the Flyers for the foreseeable future, or if he will be returned to his Canadian junior club in Oshawa to continue his development and prolong the start of his entry-level contract (ELC).  As part of the shortened season, junior players can only play in five games before the decision must be made. The opinion on whether or not he should be sent back seems relatively split down the middle. Laughton’s supporters will argue that he’s been fantastic in his role, and been one of the …

One Win

…but it’s so relieving. I didn’t even think I was going to watch Thursday night. I had a faculty party to attend at a coworker’s house and they had NHLN and were nice enough to let me watch anyway. Now my jumping up and down or maintaining the fetal position while watching hockey is known to all who were there. At least I didn’t curse like a sailor like I usually do. Although I was still taunted because the Blackhawks are 4-0. And I have to repeat, I don’t hate the Blackhawks, I just like the Flyers better. It’s like …

RICE & MICE: Multiple Sclerosis

I assume everyone that follows the National Hockey League has heard that Minnesota goalie Josh Harding was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in September while the lockout shenanigans were going on, so here’s an overview of MS and how it may impact Harding. MS is an autoimmune disease. This means that the body’s immune system doesn’t recognize something as it’s own and attacks it. Basically, the body attacks it’s own cells. Autoimmune diseases may impact certain organs, such as the thyroid, or certain types of cells. MS affects the nervous system (brain, spinal cord, nerves) by attacking the cells  that …

Crashing the Crease: Bryzgalov Solid, Despite Record

With the NHL’s 2013 Season finally underway, Crashing the Crease will evaluate the Flyers’ goaltending performances every Thursday in order to answer the inevitable dilemma in Flyerdom: what is going on in net? Week one has seen Ilya Bryzgalov play all three games of the Flyers’ 0-3 start, and the questions are already flying about just what is wrong with this team. For many, as is so often the story in Philadelphia, the finger pointing begins and ends with the goaltender. But is that fair? The easy answer would be to look at Bryzgalov’s stat line from the 3-1, 5-2, …

Facing an uphill battle up front

It’s hard to imagine a worse start to the season for the Flyers. With the schedule being so cramped, the Flyers found themselves on the menu for two home openers after starting the season with a tough loss to their in-state rivals Pittsburgh. Unfortunately for them, the damage has been caused by a host of issues throughout the line-up, and it seems to have festered with each passing game, adversely affecting the level of play in greater volumes as the madness unfolded. Now the Flyers are 0-3 and facing nothing but questions and the occasional Seth Jones quip. So where …

Atlantic Watch: 1/19-1/22

This wasn’t the way the Philadelphia Flyers wanted to start the season, but there is still plenty of time to turn it around. After they opened the 2013 campaign with a loss at home to the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Orange and Black lost a pair of road games in Buffalo and New Jersey to start the year on a three-game losing streak. Philly doesn’t just sit at the bottom of the division, they sit at the bottom of the league, as there are there are seven teams yet to record a point, but the Flyers are the only team to …

As fans donning the colors of their favorite Pennsylvania NHL team filed out of the Wells Fargo Center, others were on their way in representing the entire state with their blue and white. What to expect from McGinn

It hasn’t even been a full week yet but Tye McGinn has been called up to the Flyers due to an injury to Zac Rinaldo. The 2010, fourth round draft pick (119th overall) is a big body who has found a nice home in front of the net. He could potentially make his debut tonight against the New Jersey Devils at the Prudential Center. What potentially are the Flyers getting with this call up? A 6′ 2″, 205 pound lefty who has had a spark since coming back to Adirondack from training camp. In 33 games McGinn has tallied 11 goals with …

Stanley Cup

Sponsored: Will the shortened season benefit the Flyers?

The Philadelphia Flyers haven’t hoisted the Cup since the mid-70’s, but fans and players alike believe the 2013 shortened season uniquely benefits the “Broad Street Bullies.” Last year, while the team was ousted by the underdog Devils in the second round of the playoffs, the Flyers’ youngsters gained much-needed postseason experience that they will hopefully carry into this new season. Among them, left wing Brayden Schenn factors to be a pivotal Flyer this season. He’ll replace hockey legend Jaromir Jagr, who departed for Dallas in the offseason, on the team’s top line and will have the chance to play with …
