The Philadelphia Flyers are feeling a little bit better about themselves today as they beat the Boston Bruins yesterday by a score of 3-1. Despite losing three of their last four games, they gained a point in two of them and are currently just four points out of the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. This week will see them host the Washington Capitals and Montreal Canadiens, before travelling north to visit the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Winnipeg Jets. With every passing day and every passing game as the end of the 2013 season unravels before our eyes during this five-game homestand, it’s important to gain and keep perspective. We get it. You put your heart and soul and money towards this team. In recent days, I have had some very insightful hockey conversations with people and have read many others online as well. I would like to share some of those thoughts and include a few of my own here. Paul Holmgren has been a successful general manager in many ways but his biggest failure has been assembling solid clubs at the AHL and ECHL levels. In order to develop good prospects, the Flyers need good affiliate teams. Good prospects are less likely to reach their potential without a solid supporting cast. I’m fortunate enough to work at a school that gets two weeks off for Spring Break. Yes, two weeks.
