The Philadelphia Flyers took a four game win streak, their first of the season, into Winnipeg yesterday. They scored the first goal and, after a few shaky minutes at the beginning of the first period, completely took over registering 13 shots in the primary stanza, limiting the Jets to just four through 20 minutes of play. Winnipeg roared out of the gates in the second and notched four goals on just 12 shots, while Philadelphia could only muster five all period. On Wednesday evening in Philadelphia, the Flyers were wrapping up an all-important home stand against the second-place Montreal Canadiens, and hoping to score two points to bolster their desperate late-season playoff push. With 4:17 remaining in the second period, Simon Gagne banged home a carom off the end boards to give the Flyers a 2-1 lead, and there was much rejoicing.

Prior to curating your opinions last week, I ran down a list of the players that the Flyers should keep heading into next season. This week, I will take a different approach, stating not what should happen but what may actually happen. Throughout yesterday’s trade deadline, the team remained relatively quiet, surfacing only to claim Adam Hall off of waivers to fill Max Talbot’s spot and to swap backup goalies. The Flyers aren’t a team that gets too comfortable outside of the playoffs. Sitting with less than a 10 percent chance of qualifying as of today, this might be just the second time since 1994 that they miss the postseason. When you compare the two teams, the amount of similarities makes you wonder if maybe we should have seen this coming. It starts from the beginning with the lack of identity and definition. NCAA Frozen Four: Who will sit upon the Nation’s Throne?

For only the second time since 1993, the throne of college hockey will seat a new king. Yale, UMass-Lowell, St. Cloud State and Quinnipiac form the Frozen Four and each eye college hockey’s “iron chair.” None of these squads has ever won a national championship and besides Yale this marks their first Frozen Four appearances.
