Flight Plan: Playoffs Still Within Reach

The Philadelphia Flyers took a four game win streak, their first of the season, into Winnipeg yesterday. They scored the first goal and, after a few shaky minutes at the beginning of the first period, completely took over registering 13 shots in the primary stanza, limiting the Jets to just four through 20 minutes of play. Winnipeg roared out of the gates in the second and notched four goals on just 12 shots, while Philadelphia could only muster five all period. Newly acquired backup goaltender Steve Mason saw his first action as a Flyer, stopping all seven shots he faced …

Flyers Hockey: The Fans

There are a number of different facets that make up the Flyers brand of hockey. In this series, we’ve discussed the team/style of play, the organization, and now it’s time to turn the focus to the fans — a group in a league all their own. Flyers fans have gained a bad rep, and while it’s true that there are a select few who deserve it, the Flyers fanbase as a whole is an incredible group of people. Passionate, fiercely loyal, the people who rise and fall and live and die with a Flyers season. These are the people who …

Crashing the Crease: Bryzgalov’s Duck

On Wednesday evening in Philadelphia, the Flyers were wrapping up an all-important home stand against the second-place Montreal Canadiens, and hoping to score two points to bolster their desperate late-season playoff push. With 4:17 remaining in the second period, Simon Gagne banged home a carom off the end boards to give the Flyers a 2-1 lead, and there was much rejoicing.

Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone

Looking forward: Who goes?

Prior to curating your opinions last week, I ran down a list of the players that the Flyers should keep heading into next season. This week, I will take a different approach, stating not what should happen but what may actually happen. Throughout yesterday’s trade deadline, the team remained relatively quiet, surfacing only to claim Adam Hall off of waivers to fill Max Talbot’s spot and to swap backup goalies. The front office openly acknowledges there are many holes to fill but the restraint shown today is an indicator that Paul Holmgren is not going to overpay for players just for the sake of …

Breaking down the Bullies: Comparing down years

The Flyers aren’t a team that gets too comfortable outside of the playoffs. Sitting with less than a 10 percent chance of qualifying as of today, this might be just the second time since 1994 that they miss the postseason. When you compare the two teams, the amount of similarities makes you wonder if maybe we should have seen this coming. It starts from the beginning with the lack of identity and definition. During the 2006-07 season, the Flyers went through a lot of turnover due to a lack of early success and off-season change. They lost two big pieces …

Atlantic Watch: Flyers add Huskins and Rosehill, Pens’ streak ends, Islanders sit in eighth, Rangers add Clowe

The Philadelphia Flyers fought hard this week to stay in the playoff hunt, but a laundry list of injuries is only going to make things more difficult for the Orange and Black to reach the postseason. With a depleted defense and the loss of a key energy forward, Philly will need to grab a handful of points against three teams in the playoff picture and one looking to crack the Eastern Conference’s top eight. The Flyers started the week with a 4-3 shootout loss to the New York Islanders in Philly on Thursday. Josh Bailey beat Ilya Bryzgalov on the …

NCAA Frozen Four: Who will sit upon the Nation’s Throne?

For only the second time since 1993, the throne of college hockey will seat a new king. Yale, UMass-Lowell, St. Cloud State and Quinnipiac form the Frozen Four and each eye college hockey’s “iron chair.” None of these squads has ever won a national championship and besides Yale this marks their first Frozen Four appearances. Yale’s only berth in the final foursome came back in 1952 where they finished in third-place. Back in 1952 the NCAA ice hockey championships were relatively new with its origin dating back to 1948. From the tournament’s inception through the 1957 championship the event was …

Draft Eligibles 2013: Is Quebec Remparts winger Adam Erne the next great Connecticut born player?

Like many elite hockey players across North America, living away from home is nothing new. In fact it’s the norm. For New Haven, Connecticut native and Quebec Remparts winger Adam Erne, being on the road is something he has grown accustomed too. So how does a kid from Connecticut wind up playing in one of the premier junior hockey leagues in the world? When Erne was 13 years old he moved from New England to California to play with the elite Los Angeles Kings Selects program. In fact, he actually billeted with the family of Tri-City Americans goalie Eric Comrie …
