The Second Day of Claudemas: Two Non Howe Twos

Here we are in December with little to do in this tough lockout time. What’s a blog to do? Well, it looks like a 12 Days of Christmas-themed series of posts is the way to go. But, we realize that all of you hockey fans aren’t into Christmas, so we’ve named it after the man nicknamed Orange Jesus and called it Claudemas. On the second day of Claudemas, Flyers Faithful gave to me…two Flyers who wore the number two that aren’t the great Mark Howe! Mark Howe finally made it into the Hockey Hall of Fame this year, and the …

Trenton Update: 11/30-12/6

Despite the fact that the Trenton Titans allowed 12 goals in their pair of games this past weekend against the Elmira Jackals — the Ottawa Senators’ affiliate — the Titans managed to split the series at the Sun National Bank Center. Trenton’s record improved to 2-2-0 against the Jackals this season and 8-10-1 for the 2012-2013 campaign. The Titans look to move up in the standings with two contests this weekend in Charleston against the South Carolina Stingrays. The madness began when Trenton edged out the Jackals on Saturday with a 7-6 shootout win. Niko Hovinen was pulled after the …

Crashing the Crease: Long-term Shootout Shortcomings

We’re all Flyers fans here. Given that, we know the areas where the Orange and Black have consistently come up short. One of those, pardon my French, most damnably obvious areas has to be the shootout. The reality of just how bad this team is after the 65-minute mark may not be grasped by all, but a quick look at the stats reveals that the Flyers are very comfortable basement dwellers here. Thanks in large part to Winnipeg’s only having played in eight shootouts since re-expanding into the league, the Flyers sit firmly in 29th place in shootout wins. Their …

Homer’s Do’s and Doh’s: Giroux Extension v. Carter Trade and Gagne Trade v. Bryzgalov Trade and Sign

Paul Holmgren became the interim General Manager of the Philadelphia Flyers on October 22, 2006. That interim title was removed only weeks later on November 11. Holmgren was able to take a team that finished last in the National Hockey League, and rebuild it to make a deep run all the way to the Eastern Conference Finals the very next season. Yes, some of Holmgren’s moves have been amazing, but he’s also a guy who has gotten this organization into some hot water with the salary cap and was forced to make deals that were head scratchers to say the least. If you enjoyed …

Then and Now: Tony Amonte

The Philadelphia Flyers acquired Tony Amonte in March of 2003 from the Phoenix Coyotes, rescuing the Boston native from an underwhelming free agent situation. In exchange for the veteran forward, Philly gave the Coyotes Guillaume Lefebvre, a third-round pick in the 2003 NHL Draft (with which they chose Tyler Redenbach), and a second-round pick in the 2004 NHL Draft. The 60th overall pick eventually landed in the hands of the New York Rangers, who selected Brandon Dubinsky from the Portland Winterhawks. In 59 games with Phoenix during the 2002-2003 regular season, Amonte accrued 36 points. In just 13 regular season games with the …

Point/Counterpoint: Greatest Flyer Ever, Clarke or Parent?

Welcome to the newest edition of “Point/Counterpoint,” where a pair of Flyers Faithful scribes present both sides of one particular issue with their own unique view and flair. This week, Dain S and Jim H debate who is the greatest Flyer ever, Bobby Clarke or Bernie Parent. Jim will start off with his candidate, Robert Earl Clarke. Jim: The Flyers have had players of various popularity and skill levels over their illustrious 40-plus years roaming NHL arenas, but when I close my eyes and think the word ” Flyers,” what jumps to the forefront of my mind’s eye is the image of a virtually …
