A Flyers Fan and Penguins Fan Walk Into a Bar…

It all started innocently enough. On August 20, ESPN Hockey aficionado John Buccigross tweeted the following: “No owner loves being an NHL owner or is more generous/loyal to his players than Ed Snider. CBA has not expired yet. Playing by rules.” Buccigross is referring to the Flyers re-signing of Scott Hartnell to a six-year extension. Things in Philadelphia are good. The Flyers are playing by the rules, but they are taking advantage of the rules while they still exist. The Flyers taking advantage of those moves and Buccigross’ comment did not sit well with a good friend of mine. We’ll …

Hockey Hilarity: Nice Hands

Friday funnies brought to you straight from hockey’s own players and media personnel. We’ll be mucking it up every week right here, examining puck ups, puns, tweets, and more! This week’s hockey hilarity is just your basic puck up on Twitter courtesy of one silky smooth stickhandler, but not-so-terrific-Tweeter Jordan Eberle of the Edmonton Oilers. Here’s the original tweet that I’m positive Mr. Eberle meant to send: Who was he planning to address? What was he going to say? Was it something important? Was it a profound, life-altering statement? Was it the secret of the universe? The meaning of life? Or …

CBA Chatter

Everything you wanted to know about the CBA but were afraid to ask Here are your updates from the past week on the ongoing collective bargaining agreement talks from around the Web. This week all things were quiet until Wednesday when the heads of the two families, err sides, met briefly and then promptly cancelled the afternoon session. They agreed to meet this morning. Then, this happened:[Kuklas Korner] [ESPN] [Sports Illustrated] [Hockeybuzz] [Broad Street Hockey] So basically, there was no movement except into the two trenches that both sides have dug. A lockout looks to be all but certain. Trenton Titans, …

Crashing the Crease: Stick Discipline

This week, we’ve received the news that we’re likely looking at a lockout. This was great for me, as I really love the prospect of prolonged revenue sharing discussions.  I like hockey, don’t get me wrong, but I’m also pretty sure that the on-ice action isn’t why we’re all fans.  There’s actually very little doubt that an HBO 24/7 series chronicling the boardroom discussions leading to the pending shutdown of NHL hockey would rival the tension and entertainment value of an OT game in the Stanley Cup Finals, and I’m glad the league recognized this fact. Still, even with how …

Several weeks back, we asked our beloved Twitter followers who were their most loved and hated Flyers of the past decade. It led to some great names and some great discussion. Well it got us thinking. In the doldrums that is August in the hockey world — not to mention the impending doom of a lockout —  we decided to put together a tournament; poll style! We’ve compiled the responses for both the Loved and Hated categories, and seeded them according to our whims and wishes. What you see before you is the result of our efforts. While we may …

Then and Now: Sami Kapanen

In the middle of the 2002-2003 regular season, the Philadelphia Flyers shipped defenseman Bruno St. Jacques and winger Pavel Brendl to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for a pair of players. Ryan Bast was one player Philly acquired in the deal, a defenseman who only played a pair of games in the NHL, both of which were with the Flyers. The other was Sami Kapanen, a veteran left winger in his eighth season in the NHL. After several seasons with the Hartford Whalers’ organization, who became the Hurricanes in his third season with the club, Kapanen became a member of his …

Around the Net 08.21.2012

Welcome to Around the Net, a weekly look through linkage at the Philadelphia Flyers and other news from around the NHL. Hartnell gets extended Scott Hartnell gets a 6 year contract extension from the Flyers on Monday:[Broad Street Hockey] [The Checking Line] [The 700 Level] My take on Hartnell- I love this deal, with an average cap hit of $4.75 million a year, Hartnell gets a $550,000 raise and stays in orange and black for 6 years longer. Looks really good to me. The Wayne Train also gets paid Oh, in case you forgot or live in a cave, Wayne …

The Young and the Restless

Call me crazy, but I love what the Flyers are doing. With the exception of not signing Shea Weber, I’m very happy the Flyers did not sign Ryan Suter or Zach Parise. I’m content – no, I’m ecstatic that the Flyers have decided to use their excess money to lock up the core of their team. The latest beneficiary of the Flyers’ decision to keep their money within their team was signing power forward Wayne Simmonds to a six-year, $23 million extension. The Flyers have once again paid a handsome fee for talent and potential. As we’ve seen in the past …
