Something To Make Up

Last week was supposed to be my last skate lesson (of what I paid for) and I was hoping to share complete awesomeness about it with you guys. Unfortunately, some family stuff came up and I had to head back to Tennessee a few days early, which means I didn’t get to that lesson. Fortunately, I can make it up later. I’ve already decided that I want to continue lessons for the course of the school year. Everyone needs a break from grading essays, right? But I do have two hockey-related stories to share despite the rough week. The first …

Hockey Hilarity: The Evolution of a Good Chirp

Friday funnies brought to you straight from hockey’s own players and media personnel. We’ll be mucking it up every week right here, examining puck ups, puns, tweets, and more! If you’ve ever played hockey or watched HBO’s documentary series 24/7: Road to the Winter Classic, you’d know that one of the best parts about the sport is the in-game banter, more commonly known as “chirping”. I mean, who doesn’t remember Mike Rupp’s infamous chirp at Jody Shelley “You’re irrelevant out here”? It’s hilarious and fun and we all wish we could hear all of the ridiculous things these grown men …

And All The Other Boys Try To Chase Me

The Lulz feature was originally inspired by the lolcats site but features hockey pictures with funny, quirky, ironic or just plain mean captions. This feature should run weekly on Fridays; TGIFWL (Thank Goodness It’s Friday With Lulz).

Being closer to the point of a deflection increases the angle required to beat a goaltender, improving the odds of a blocking save.

Crashing the Crease: Crashing the Crease

No, that title is not a symptom of double vision or some colossal editorial mistake. There is an important element to any hockey team’s game plan, and that is the very act of crashing the crease. Some broadcasters may refer to it as having good “net presence,” “going to the dirty areas to score,” or being in position to score a “garbage goal.” But net presence — and crashing the crease — is not a simple thing. Any team looking to crash the crease has a few major goals to accomplish, and each tactic demands a different response from the …

Then and Now: Luke Richardson

Defenseman Luke Richardson joined the Philadelphia Flyers in the summer of 1997, as he signed a five-year contract where he earned $2.5 million in the first four years and $2.6 million in his final season. After reaching the postseason just twice with the Edmonton Oilers in his six-year span with the club from 1991-97, Richardson helped the Flyers reach the playoffs each of the five seasons he was in Philly. In his initial campaign, the Flyers finished third in the Eastern Conference with 95 points, as only the New Jersey Devils and Pittsburgh Penguins finished with more. Richardson played in …

Point/Counterpoint: Team defense and its effect on goaltending

Welcome to another edition of Point/Counterpoint, where a pair of Flyers Faithful scribes square off, debating an issue with their own unique style and flair. This week our resident goaltenders, and co-authors of Crashing the Crease, Kevin A and Justin B take on the issue of team defense and how it might affect goaltending. Point: The Flyers trying and failing to upgrade their defense, which has arguably gotten worse this summer, is going to be a bad thing for Ilya Bryzgalov.  by Kevin A The new defense will have a tough learning curve early in the year especially with the loss of their best puck mover …

Jim Jackson: The Flyers Faithful interview

Jim Jackson has been a part of the fabric of Flyers hockey ever since he was brought to the organization as the radio play-by-play voice back in 1993. On the advent of his 20th year calling NHL action here in Philadelphia, JJ was kind enough to talk to Bob H. on a variety of topics related to his journey through the years that has landed him with one of the top clubs in the National Hockey League and as a fixture for not only hockey, but also Phillies baseball. BH: It’s common knowledge that you’re from Upstate New York. From …
