Game 3: Ordinary Miracles

Flyers Faithful presents the third in a seven-part series examining and celebrating the 1987 Stanley Cup Finals between the Philadelphia Flyers and Edmonton Oilers, arguably the best NHL championship pairing of the last 30 years. “One sportswriter called it the greatest comeback from the dead he had ever witnessed” – Earl Mann, narrator “Blood, Sweat and Cheers.” Though it is far from Politically Correct in this era, when Gene Hart said the Oilers “had a pistol to the Flyers’ heads” at the 1:49 mark of the second period on this Friday night of Memorial Day Weekend in Philadelphia (3:56), he …

CBA 101 Part 1: Waivers and Re-Entry Waivers

I know some people care about the rules and regulations within the CBA more than others. One thing is for sure though, these rules and regulations directly impact the team that can be put on the ice. To me, that makes it fascinating! Some of the topics are quite simple, while others are very complex. Heck, Paul Holmgren doesn’t even seem to understand it all. So throughout the off-season, I plan to put together a series of CBA related posts to help paint a clearer picture. It will also allow us to reference these articles when writing about other topics, …

Game 2: Uphill Climb

Flyers Faithful presents the second in a seven-part series examining and celebrating the 1987 Stanley Cup Finals between the Philadelphia Flyers and Edmonton Oilers, arguably the best NHL championship pairing of the last 30 years. Since ancient times, the recording of phenomena, also known as omens, has either guided or misguided humanity from kings down to peasants towards a path they believe will lead to glory. After a disheartening Game 1 loss, if you thought the Philadelphia Flyers might not have a snowball’s chance in Hell of walking out of Edmonton with a split to begin the Stanley Cup Finals, …

cry

What to do when your team is done:

1. Pick a new team to watch for the remainder of the playoffs. 2. Cry 3. Reassure yourself that it’s a rebuilding year and they did damn well to get as far as they did. 4. Cry 5. Remind yourself that they beat their rivals. 6. Cry 7. Whine about the referees all through the playoffs. 8. Cry 9. Take a deep breath and pray the offseason isn’t as traumatic as the last one. 10. Buy some tissues. It’s okay to cry a little.

Flyers West Update: Carter Comes Alive

Before the Kings traded Jack Johnson and a conditional first-round pick to the Blue Jackets back in February, they were the lowest goal-scoring team in the league. They needed a proven scorer, and they also needed someone who could provide depth. Enter Jeff Carter, apparently now the jewel in the crown. Despite Carter’s impressive regular season numbers — he led the Flyers in goals his last three seasons with the team and has had four 25-plus goal seasons in the NHL — his playoff performance has always been questioned. In Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals, Carter made a …

RICE & MICE: Ouch, my bursa!

A bursa is a thin, fluid filled sac that helps cushion and reduce friction in joints between the skin, and tendons or between skin and bone. Usually, a bursa only contains a small amount of fluid, like a zipper sandwich baggie with a tablespoon of olive oil in it. Bursitis is an inflammation of a bursa and commonly occurs in the shoulder, knee, elbow, and hip and sometimes the ankle and foot. Bursitis may be acute or chronic and may be caused by overuse of a joint or trauma to the joint. Trauma or repeated movements can irritate the bursa …

Then and Now: Mike York

In his first few weeks as General Manager of the Philadelphia Flyers, Paul Holmgren made a handful of trades in an attempt to pull Philly out of last place in the NHL. With the Orange and Black in the midst of a seven-game losing streak to drop to a record of 8-21-4, Holmgren pulled the trigger on his fourth deal in office. After he acquired Darren Reid, Todd Fedoruk, and Alexei Zhitnik in separate deals, Holmgren grabbed Mike York from the New York Islanders in exchange for Randy Robitaille and a fifth-round pick in the 2008 NHL draft. The Isles chose Matt Martin with the …

Point/Counterpoint: Jagr Mst Stay, Jagr Mst Go

Welcome to the newest edition of “Point/Counterpoint,” where a pair of Flyers Faithful scribes present both sides of one particular issue with their own unique view and flair. This week, Nick D. and Bob H. renew hostilities on the topic of whether or not Jaromir Jagr should be back in Orange and Black next season. Point, from Nick: The Philadelphia Flyers stunned most of the National Hockey League and its fans when they lured a willing Jagr away from the KHL and signed him to a one-year, $3.3 million dollar contract. Not only was it surprising because Jagr was despised …
