Jagr Fever

On July 1, 2011, the Flyers announced that they had signed former enemy of the state, Jaromir Jagr, to a one-year contract. Still fresh off of the shock, anger, and disappointment of the Mike Richards and Jeff Carter trades, I couldn’t bring myself to think of what that signing could do for the team. What could a 39-year-old who hadn’t played in the NHL for three years really bring to the table? As far as I was concerned, it was a pointless move, just like the ones they’d made only eight days prior. Jagr, Schmagr. All right, he racked up …

Point/Counterpoint: Bryzgalov found the peace in his soul to play in Philadelphia

Welcome to the newest edition of “Point/Counterpoint,” where a pair of Flyers Faithful scribes present both sides of one particular issue with their own unique view and flair. This week, Marcello D and Kim Q square off over Ilya Bryzgalov’s mental status. Point: Marcello D. Ilya Bryzgalov has become a zen master, cool as a cucumber in a bowl of hot sauce. For the second straight week, Ilya Bryzgalov was named the “First Star” by the NHL after winning eight of nine possible games in March, getting 17 of 18 possible points, posting four shutouts in five games, setting a franchise high watermark  scoreless streak, …

Around the Net 3.20.12

Welcome to Around the Net, a look at the Philadelphia Flyers on and off the ice. This week we look at Andrej Meszaros and his back, Claude Giroux and whether he misses playing with Mike Richards and Jeff Carter, Ilya Bryzgalov earning another NHL player of the week honor and more. Meszaros to have surgery, miss 6-8 weeks This could be a damaging blow to the Flyers defense, but with the additions of Kubina and Grossman and Brandon Manning’s solid play thus far, the Flyers should be able to live with Mez for a short while. This Week in Flyers History 3/18-3/24

Welcome to another installment of This Week in Flyers History, which seeks to fill in the gaps in fans’ collective memories and to give them a hand up when their friends question their hockey knowledge. March 18, 1976 Flyers 3, Canucks 2 — For the only time in his illustrious career, Bill Barber reaches the 100-point plateau in this victory over Vancouver at the Spectrum. March 18, 1995 Flyers 4, Panthers 3 (OT) — Eric Lindros posts the first of back-to-back hat tricks, with a four-point effort which included the game-winning goal 2:13 into overtime as the pre-rat Florida club …

The Streak

I was excited when I heard that Ilya Bryzgalov was going to be a Flyer. There was an immediate desire not to be pleased with the trading of Mike Richards to the Kings (supposedly to get the money) nor when I found out about the HUMANGOUS (had to) contract that the Flyers offered Bryzgalov to come. However, I liked the Phoenix goalie because I’d been following the Coyotes off and on since I started watching hockey. He got them into the playoffs in 2010 as far as I was concerned. And then the first half (3/4th’s?) of the season happened. …

Ron Genest: Hockey Art With Heart

Ron Genest may not be a household name. You won’t see his artwork hanging in museums, and you won’t find it for sale in art galleries. But Genest’s work doesn’t need accolades or fanfare to be recognized as great, because his pieces have one thing that not every piece of art does – they’ve got heart. Genest grew up in Massena, New York, the breeding grounds of minor hockey back when he was younger. Hockey was a way of life in Massena, a town close to the border with Canada and the province of Ontario, and with that region’s cold …

European Updates #5

Where do we start? The most important thing about European prospects is the playoff matchup between Bili Tygri Liberec and HC Mountfield Ceske Budejovice where Petr Nedved and Jakub Kovar trying to beat each other. To be honest, Nedved has the edge now with Liberec leading 3-1 in the series. Kovar allowed 11 goals in 4 games (4, 4, 1, 2) but Ceske Budejovice were unable to score more than one goal in two games. It reminds me of the Flyers offensive woes with Roman Cechmanek in net against Ottawa in the 2002 playoffs. Kovar saved Budejovice many times in …

Five Reasons I Love the Flyers: Rich DiPiero

Rich DiPiero grew up in the Roxborough section of Philadelphia and has been a hockey player and a Flyers fan his whole life. As a kid, his favorite player was Eric Lindros. Below, he gives us the top five reasons he loves the Flyers. 5. History While it is still one of the “younger” franchises in the NHL, over time since its establishment in 1967, the Flyers have created a great story line. Winning two Stanley Cups before the franchise turned 10 years old. With a gritty, hard-working style of play allowed Philadelphians to be easily drawn to The Broad Street Bullies. …
