A Meditation

Though hockey is sometimes couched in lofty/religious terms (and wrongly so, in my opinion) when it comes to title talk, it’s not often associated with high culture and ancient history. But that’s no reason to let inspiration flow when the opportunity arises. So, on this glorious final Sunday in December, we wish you a safe, healthy and happy day however you do it and whatever you believe, and invite you to meditate on this new creation, lovingly crafted thanks to some high praise for one particular Philadelphia Flyers forward. Go here for the explanation of the original. Girouxsalem, or, may William Blake …

A Jumble (of thoughts)

It’s two days to Christmas. That’s insane. I just got my packages out in the mail yesterday. Yeah, I was way late this year. Wish my family and friends didn’t live so far away. The logistics when you’re a nomad like me. I thought today I would just do some quick reviews of much that’s been going on. We’ve had two episodes of HBO’s 24/7 Flyers Rangers so far with lots of quotable moments (HuMANGous Big) and Giroux returned after four games off for a four point night. Crazy busy in Flyerdom. First though, The Hockey News, Vol. 65 No. …

RICE & MICE: Concussions are the flavor of the month…

Well, according to Matt Carle on HBO’s 24/7 Road to the NHL Winter Classic last night, concussions are the flavor of the month. I think it’s safe to say that Claude Giroux has had enough of the current flavor. Giroux returned to game action last night, posting yet another impressive 4 point game. I know many people were concerned with his relatively quick return to the ice. Concerned that he would aggravate his concussion and miss even more time; concerned that he would somehow end up like Marc Savard, Sidney Crosby, or even Chris Pronger. What makes Claude different is …

Five Reasons I Love the Flyers: Mark Trible

Mark Trible is the head Flyers writer and content manager for The Checking Line. He also co-hosts Flyers Corner radio. You can also follow him on Twitter. Below, he gives us the top five reasons he loves the Flyers. 5. The dedication of the fans I can say that I’ve come across all types of fans in my life, and Flyers fans are certainly among the top of the line when it comes to diehards. Even at rookie camp, massive amounts of people come out and support the team. It’s not just that they support the team, many of them know …

Our 2011 Christmas wish list

Amid the gift-buying hype of the holiday season, we would like to step back for a minute and continue our tradition of compiling a list of our top ten Flyers-related Christmas wishes. It goes without saying that we want the Flyers to win the Stanley Cup. So, we will just leave that one off the list and assume we are all on the same page there. 10. Continuation of improved communication between players and fans Two events that occurred on Twitter this season reaffirmed my belief in humanity. Neither was particularly Earth shattering but both deserve recognition. The first was …

3 on 3 for the week of 12.18.2011

Welcome to 3-on-3,where we look back on the the week that was for the Philadelphia Flyers from a statical point of view. The Orange and Black went 2-1 last week, watching their seven-game winning streak come to an end against the Bruins, but maintaining the overall lead in the Eastern Conference with 43 points. A rash of concussions to key players like Claude Giroux and Chris Pronger has forced other players to step up and contribute. Let’s get to this week’s “hot” and “not”:   3 “hot”: Wayne Simmonds — The 23-year-old right wing had a good week, scoring two …

Final Call Part One

So it’s finals week at the school I teach at and today I just gave my very first objective/essay final. My brain is mush. I’m not exaggerating. I believe it is a cross between porridge and pudding. I have essays to grade coming out of my ears and christmas presents to wrap and…I’m making excuses, I know. I am not finished with Kerry Fraser’s The Final Call. I will be by next week because school is out on Tuesday. But going through the book this slowly and then having to write about it is making me far more specific than …

Lindros, LeClair join forces for a cause

Eric Lindros and John LeClair are as much a study in contrasts as they are a study in similarities — but both men do not betray their roots and are still prime examples of how playing the game of hockey has molded their personalities. Lindros is 38. LeClair is 42. One is Canadian, one is American. One has returned to his native country and the other is still a resident of the area. Lindros took great pains to show how pained he still is that his Canada squad lost to the USA in the 1996 World Cup of Hockey on …
