Tapping the Pipes 10/11/11

It has only been two games, but new Flyers starting goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov has lived up to the hype thus far. The Flyers began the season with a trip to Boston to do battle with the Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins at TD Garden. In the franchise’s second consecutive positive goalie debut (rookie Sergei Bobrovsky stormed onto the scene last season with a 25-save victory in Pittsburgh), Bryzgalov stopped 22 of the 23 shots he faced in a 2-1 Flyers victory. Following an opening flurry during which the Bruins carried the play, taking it to the Flyers in every zone, Philadelphia …

3 on 3 for the week of 10.9.11

Welcome to 3 on 3, a new weekly column I will be doing for flyersfaithful.com. It will be a statistical breakdown of the past week’s games and a look at the three best and worst Flyers of the week. The Flyers have started out hot, going 2-0 in their first 2 games, beating Boston 2-1 on Thursday and shutting out the Devils 3-0 on Saturday.  Everyone is playing well for the most part so lets go to my three “Hot” players for last week: 1. Wayne Simmonds- Wearing #17 and having to fill some of Jeff Carter’s  goal scoring shoes …

Kerry Huffman has some great discussions with his son

Former Flyer, Kerry Huffman, may be best remembered by most people in Philadelphia for being part of the blockbuster trade that made Eric Lindros a Flyer. My fondest memory involving Huffman, on the other hand, occurred when I was in grade school and I won a Flyers puck autographed by the former first round pick at St. Monica’s Fathers and Sons breakfast. That is, until now. Huffman runs the blog, Navigating the World of Hockey. On occasion, he discusses life as a hockey dad. Take this conversation he had with his son, for example: “Dad, way back then did you …

We are very grateful that they took the time to share their opinions and predictions with us. Each day of this week, we will run the answers to one of those questions. Today’s question is: Aside from Briere, which forward will step up as a leader for the Flyers this season? Dave Isaac: The two biggest names that will need to step up are Claude Giroux …

Z is for Zamboni

It’s that time again. Another book and another review. (taken from google images) Z is for Zamboni is written by Matt Napier and illustrated by Melanie Rose (the same team who did Hat Tricks Count). And like the first picture book I brought to you, this has the same set-up. A four-line rhyme using the letter of choice and a great illustration. Then on the sidebars of the pages is more information about the term or person described in the rhyme. Here’s a peek: L is for Lord Stanley’s Cup, every team’s true quest. Its winners hold it high and …

He Needs a Mind Eraser

The Lulz feature was originally inspired by the lolcats site but features hockey pictures with funny, quirky, ironic or just plain mean captions. This feature should run weekly on Fridays; TGIFWL (Thank Goodness It’s Friday With Lulz).

Today’s question is: Schenn aside, which prospects stand the best chance of making the Flyers this season? Dave Isaac: When the Flyers made the big trades over the summer, it looked like Matt Read …

Forged Dialogues: Ilya Bryzgalov

Flyers Faithful would like to take a moment to thank Ilya Bryzgalov for taking some time out of his busy routine to sit down with us and answer some questions about his career. FF: First of all, Ilya, welcome to Philadelphia. How are you finding your transition to this city? IB: Has been great! People recognize me and, uh, city take an actual interest in team and sport of hockey. FF: What was your experience like in Phoenix? IB: Things were little different there. You know, much of our equipment was lifted from practice facilities when we were on road. …

Five Questions: Which offseason acquisition(s) will prove to be the best for the Flyers? Which will be the worst?

Today’s question is: Which offseason acquisition(s) will prove to be the best for the Flyers? Which will be the worst? Dave Isaac: If Ilya Bryzgalov isn’t the best offseason acquisition, there’s a big problem. …

RICE & MICE: On femur fractures and icing…

Certain injuries have the ability to spark a fierce debate in regards to rule changes, and it’s usually the severe or gruesome injuries that result in near immediate change. Even though some players had called seamless glass unsafe for years, the head and neck injuries suffered by Max Pacioretty last season was partially responsible for the prompt switch from seamless to non-seamless glass and to look at the padding around the glass in time for the 2011-12 NHL season. The recent focus on concussions and head injuries have resulted in another alteration of the rule book in regards to boarding …
