RICE & MICE: Achilles tendon rupture

In Greek mythology, the legend of Achilles says he was dipped into the river Styx by his mother, Thetis, in order to make him invulnerable. However, she had to hold onto his heel in order to dip him in the water, thus missing a spot. The only way Achilles could be killed was by injury to his heel. The Achilles tendon is the strongest and thickest tendon in the body and can withstand large forces, yet it’s one of the most frequently ruptured tendons. Rupturing an Achilles tendon is a very serious injury that takes months to rehabilitate. Athletes who …

An in-depth look at Andreas Nodl, the trade deadline, and more with Geoff Detweiler

Broad Street Hockey has been very gracious to Flyers Faithful, linking to many of our stories since we joined the hockey blogging ranks this season. We greatly respect their opinions, as they are one of the top Flyer-centric hockey sites around. So, when we realized Andreas Nodl was a heated topic for Geoff Detweiler, it piqued our interest. We asked Geoff if he would care to share his thoughts on Nodl, the trade deadline, and more. He agreed to do so and provided some really great insights and perspective into these topics. Please read on as Geoff took the time …

RICE & MICE: Blood clots, DVTs and PEs, oh my!

Anytime a highly conditioned athlete complains about shortness of breath after a normal “routine” workout there are eyebrows raised in the training room and action is taken.   Less than 2 weeks ago the Colorado Avalanche announced that Tomas Fleischmann will be on the shelf for the remainder of the 2010-2011 season after blood clots, or pulmonary emboli, were discovered in both lungs.   A deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot that forms most commonly in the lower leg, though it can also occur in the upper extremities. A DVT can pose risk to the affected limb, but …

Spectrum Memories: Sometimes They Come Back

To celebrate my 25th year of hockey fandom, I will occasionally step into the way-back machine and write about events in the Flyers’ past. For the balance of the season, I will be dipping into the well to ruminate about some things related to my love of the Philadelphia Flyers, and in general about the fan experience as a youngster. This is the sixth in the series of Spectrum Memories. Losing a family member or a friend to relocations, sickness or death is never a good experience, and the emotions are very raw and fresh when you’re a kid. Thankfully, my rather small family …

Five Reasons I Love the Flyers: David Isaac

David Isaac is a Multimedia Content Producer for Philly.com and runs The ADD Show. You can follow him on Twitter. 5. The personality Hockey players are unlike any other. When compared to the millionaires of other sports, there is a clear difference. Hockey players don’t think they’re better than you. They don’t talk down to you. They’re regular guys that just happen to shoot a 100 mph slapper. Everyone I’ve met through the organization has been as classy as can be. After a tough loss the players will still talk with the media, not turn their noses up and walk …

RICE & MICE: Chronic Ankle Instability

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you have probably heard about the 2011 version of “Peter Forsberg’s Comeback to the NHL.” For the better part of the last decade there have been whispers and rumors about a possible comeback for Forsberg at least once in each NHL season. Mentioning Forsberg’s name may prompt any combination three reactions from hockey fans: they love him, they hate him or they complain about the number of injuries that have plagued his career in the NHL. We are now in a point of the 2010-2011 season where people are once again speculating that …

Milestone Madness

It’s amazing to think the Flyers are on pace to reach 1,000 home wins in franchise history.  It would have been sweet to see the Orange and Black do it this past Saturday against the rival New Jersey Devils, but Johan Hedberg and Patrik Elias had a little something to say in that regard. Anywhoo…Philly gets another crack at a grand tonight against the Montreal Canadiens, in the final meeting of a four-game regular-season series which serves as the Flyers’ final contest before the All-Star Break. Since our hockey club, which sits atop the NHL standings, is so close to this momentous occasion, it’s …
