Then and Now: Mike York

In his first few weeks as General Manager of the Philadelphia Flyers, Paul Holmgren made a handful of trades in an attempt to pull Philly out of last place in the NHL. With the Orange and Black in the midst of a seven-game losing streak to drop to a record of 8-21-4, Holmgren pulled the trigger on his fourth deal in office. After he acquired Darren Reid, Todd Fedoruk, and Alexei Zhitnik in separate deals, Holmgren grabbed Mike York from the New York Islanders in exchange for Randy Robitaille and a fifth-round pick in the 2008 NHL draft. The Isles chose Matt Martin with the …

Point/Counterpoint: Jagr Mst Stay, Jagr Mst Go

Welcome to the newest edition of “Point/Counterpoint,” where a pair of Flyers Faithful scribes present both sides of one particular issue with their own unique view and flair. This week, Nick D. and Bob H. renew hostilities on the topic of whether or not Jaromir Jagr should be back in Orange and Black next season. Later, as a large serpentine behemoth heads for the heroes, the nerdy scientist walks towards it. His cohorts tell him he needs to get angry and as he turns to face the enemy, he finally reveals …

Giroux Showing Improvement in the Faceoff Circle

At one point in early April, Claude Giroux strung together a fairly dominant 10 games in the faceoff circle, winning just under 60 percent of his draws over that span. After posting seasons of 49.5% and 50% in his first 2 full seasons in the NHL, it got me wondering if he was on his way to a tangible, sustainable improvement. One of the things I admire about Sidney Crosby is that he entered the league quite poor in the faceoff department, at roughly 45%. He then worked at it and now normally comes in at a good 55-56%. Giroux …
