Sim returns to Phantoms on PTO

A key component to the Phantoms’ last Calder Cup triumph returned to the organization on Thursday. Jon Sim, a journeyman player who has skated at multiple levels both in and out of North America, was signed to a professional tryout contract (PTO) by the Adirondack Phantoms. “I was in touch with (Paul) Holmgren through my agent. I was on a PTO with San Antonio and things were going good, they wanted to keep me, but the opportunity to come up here and to play in this organization…again…was a great opportunity for me.” Sim was released from a similar deal with …

Future Flyers Report: 1/28

Tye McGinn made his NHL debut on Tuesday night, as his first four games with the Philadelphia Flyers were impressive. Not only did the forward knock around Kris Newbury in his second game, McGinn registered his first goal in the NHL in the first period of Philly’s 7-1 rout of the Florida Panthers on Saturday. On top of that, McGinn has six hits in his first four contests with the Flyers. Unfortunately for Eric Wellwood, McGinn’s success at the highest level helped cause him to be moved down to the Adirondack Phantoms. It was a case of deja vu for the Phantoms as Albany Devils left winger, Joe Whitney, scored two goals for the second time in one week resulting in a Devils 4-1 victory over the Phantoms at the Glens Falls Civic Center in front of 4,633 fans. Matthew Ford scored the lone goal for the Phantoms (17-18-3) as Brian Boucher made 26 saves while having trouble with shots from the slot. The first period was full …

During the opening weekend of the NHL season, a pair of prospects joined the Philadelphia Flyers’ roster in the team’s first two games of the 2013 campaign. The tandem of Scott Laughton, who enjoyed his first two games in the NHL, and Eric Wellwood, who registered at least one game played for the Flyers in each of the last three seasons, went pointless in the Flyers’ losses on Saturday and Sunday, but they did provide some noticeable performances. Laughton, who was picked 20th overall in the 2012 NHL Draft, was somewhat of a surprise to make the Flyers’ roster. However, …

Whitney’s pair help Devils banish Phantoms

The Adirondack Phantoms started their stretch of three games in three days on Friday night on home ice, but it was no comfort in a 4-3 loss to the Albany Devils in front of 4,606 at the Glens Falls Civic Center. In the first of four meetings within six games against their northern neighbors, Joe Whitney tallied the go-ahead and insurance goals for the Devils (15-13-7). Matt Anderson and Harri Pesonen also scored, while Keith Kinkaid stopped 27 shots. Tye McGinn lit the lamp and Jason Akeson added a marker with two assists for the Phantoms (15-19-2), but Cal Heeter …
