Chubak joins organization on AHL contract

The Phantoms goaltending situation for next season might have become a little clearer on Sunday, as the organization added heralded goaltender Carsen Chubak to an American Hockey League deal. As a junior, the 24-year-old backstop helped guide his program to an NCAA Tournament berth — a loss to North Dakota — but finished tied for first in all of D-I with six shutouts, along with a 1.91 goals-against average, .939 save percentage and 23-7-5 record. He was one of 10 original finalists for the Hobey Baker, but was left out of the final three. In three seasons with the Purple …

After Kent Huskins suffered a concussion from Ryan White’s illegal hit in the Philadelphia Flyers’ 7-3 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Monday, yet another unexpected defenseman made an appearance on the Flyers’ blue line. This time it was Brandon Manning. Manning played in a few games for the Orange and Black last season, as he posted a plus-1 rating in four contests for Philly. He didn’t record a point with the Flyers last season, but the former Chilliwack Bruin played well in his first stretch at the NHL level. A day after Huskins’ injury, Manning appeared in his first …

College Hockey Roundup: Bulldogs earn first NCAA title; Shero bests Holmgren for Hartzell

The Yale Bulldogs grew from harmless pups to a pugnacious power in a matter of weeks, leaving their teeth marks in the NCAA record books in the process. For a team that couldn’t buy a goal during the March 22-23 weekend of the 2013 ECAC Tournament, to a scoring machine in the NCAA Tournament, one must wonder what kind of juiced-up puppy chow the Bulldogs ate in April. Oddly enough, the two Connecticut colleges that faced off in the national championship were shut out in the ECAC semifinals. The top-seeded Bobcats suffered a 4-0 defeat to seventh-seed Brown. Third-seeded Yale …
