Thanksgiving is supposed to be a time of giving and appreciating the bounties accumulated over the past year. Less than a week after this gluttonous holiday, the Western Hockey League presented the Portland Winterhawks with a trip to the backyard deep fryer. WHL commissioner Ron Robison announced on November 28 that the league suspended the Winterhawks for a series of violations of WHL regulations. The strange and wonderful hockey journey of Scott Laughton continues on Thursday, as the organization pressed the “up” button on his elevator and announced he will spend the remainder of the season with the Phantoms on an amateur tryout contract. A Flyers insider first reported the news this morning. It’s a bit of a whirlwind for the youngster, who on Monday was given a five-game suspension by the Ontario Hockey League for an illegal hit while playing for the Oshawa Generals. At first glace it would appear that Joe Sakic and Seth Jones have very little in common. Sakic was born in Burnaby, BC, with the sole purpose of playing ice hockey. Mark Alt joined the Philadelphia Flyers’ organization just before the beginning of this shortened NHL season began back in the middle of January. In a deal that also brought Brian Boucher back to Philly, the Orange and Black also acquired Alt from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for forward Luke Pither.Alt spent this season with the University of Minnesota, a squad that was upset by the Yale Bulldogs in the opening round of the NCAA tournament. The Philadelphia Phantoms have sported one of the most anemic offenses in the American Hockey League all season, and had to deal with multiple call-ups due to injuries to the parent club. On Wednesday, they finally get to do some addition without subtraction as winger Brandon Alderson is on his way from Sault Ste. Marie to Glens Falls thanks to signing an amateur tryout contract for the remainder of this season. Earlier this week the Philadelphia Flyers’ organization signed Kyle Flanagan, a forward that recently completed his senior year at St. Lawrence University, to a one-year entry-level contract. The 24-year-old, who finished second on St. Lawrence’s squad with 47 points in 35 games and was named a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, will join the Adirondack Phantoms on an amateur tryout contract for the remainder of the 2012-2013 regular season.
