North American Hockey Roundup: Anthony Mantha is a stud; The Erie Otters are for real; Providence moves up in NCAA rankings

When the Detroit Red Wings selected Anthony Mantha with the 20th overall pick in this past year’s draft they got the best pure goal scorer in the 2013 draft class according to numerous scouts. He certainly has not disappointed so far this season with the Val-d’Or Foreurs of the QMJHL. Mantha currently leads the QMJHL in scoring with 18 goals and 33 points in 12 games played. Right now, he’s too good to play in the QMJHL. How he fell to #20 is crazy and is something I will never understand. He should be in the AHL with Grand Rapids, but since …

2014 Draft Eligibles: USHL Preliminary Top 10

The USHL is the top junior hockey league in the United States and the league consists of 16 teams primarily in the mid-western United States. Over the last 10 years, the USHL has become a factory and a pipeline to the NHL. Currently, 213 USHL alumni are playing in the NHL and 211 USHL players have college commitments already this season. 2014 Draft Eligibles: WHL Preliminary Top 10

There are 33 WHL skaters and 2 goaltenders listed on the NHL Central Scouting North American “Ones to Watch” list. On the list, players are classified as A, B, or C skaters respectively. Seven players from the WHL were listed as “A” skaters and all seven of those are on my list including potential number one overall pick Sam Reinhart. According to the WHL’s website, 20% of all players who played in the NHL last season played juniors in the WHL. A total of 33 WHL players were selected in the 2013 NHL Draft, including eight in the first round. …

2014 Draft Eligibles: QMJHL Preliminary Top 10

The QMJHL had a banner year last year with the Halifax Mooseheads dominating the CHL en route to a Memorial Cup victory in Saskatoon. The “Q” also saw six players taken in the first round and produced a total of 31 players overall. The 2014 draft class certainly does not have the star power of 2013, but there are a few players who could be top 15 selections come June. Click here for my OHL rankings. 1. Ivan Barbashev (C/LW) Moncton Wildcats He was the first overall pick in the 2012 CHL Import Draft and showed the individual skills that …

2014 Draft Eligibles: OHL Preliminary Top 10

With the 2013-14 OHL season slated to start tonight, I figured I would give my preliminary top 10 OHL prospects for the 2014 draft in Philadelphia. For the next several weeks I will be ranking my top 10 prospects in each CHL league, plus Europe and the USHL. Originally, I thought the 2014 class as a whole would be a step down from last year in terms of overall talent. However, after months of watching film and scouting that may not be the case at all. This crop of OHL prospects has the potential to be one of the strongest …
