College Hockey Roundup: BC wins 4th straight Beanpot; Quinnipiac #1 for the first time ever; Hockey City Classic preview

The Boston College class of 2013 etched themselves into the record books Monday night at TD Garden as the first Eagle team to sweep the Beanpot, winning their fourth straight title by defeating Northeastern, 6-3. Prior to Monday, no Boston College senior class could claim a perfect 8-0 Beanpot record — not even the Brian Gionta-led class that went to four straight Frozen Fours from 1998 to 2001. However, their arch rivals the Boston University Terriers have. From 1995 to 2000, three straight senior classes had a perfect Beanpot record. Flyers should consider Troy Rutkowski: A Poor Man’s Justin Schultz

It is hard to go unnoticed when you stand 6-foot-1 and weigh 207 pounds. It is even harder when your team is largely considered the most potent threat in all of Canadian juniors. However, that’s exactly been the case for Portland Winterhawks defenseman Troy Rutkowski. Last night in Vancouver the Winterhawks’ captain played in his 225th consecutive game, extending his franchise record Iron Man streak. Although he didn’t produce a single point, PIM, and left with an even plus/minus rating, Laughton had 10 shots on net and 10 hits. Laughton’s last game with the Generals before he left for the Flyers was a 4-3 shootout win over Derek Mathers’ Peterborough Petes on January 11th. The pair of Flyers’ prospects had …

Munroe the Magnificent stars as Phantoms rout Crunch

Scott Munroe was the silent hero on Sunday afternoon, as he stopped 42-of-43 shots while the rest of the Phantoms uncharacteristically came together as a team and took it to the Syracuse Crunch by a 6-1 score in front of 3,076 fans at the Glens Falls Civic Center. Adirondack (19-24-3) had something to prove after a week of drama on and off the ice including a loss at Syracuse on Friday night. Goals by Erik Gustafsson, Matt Mangene, Jeff Dimmen and David Laliberte  chased starter Riku Helenius out of the net after two periods, while Cullen Eddy and Laliberte tallied in …

Ftorek’s Blast Gives Kalamazoo 2-1 OT Win Over Titans

The Trenton Titans may have outshot the visiting Kalamazoo Wings 46-27, but the hosts fell 2-1 in overtime last night at the Sun National Bank Center. Sam Ftorek had the game-winner for Kalamazoo with 1:01 left in overtime, while former Trenton Devil Joel Martin stopped 45 shots for the Wings. Brett Lysak had the opening goal for the visitors, while Jacob Cepis’ 14th of 2012-2013 was the lone goal for Trenton. Scott Wedgewood had 25 saves on 27 of the shots the Wings threw at him, as the overtime loss concluded the Titans’ 1-1-1 homestand. The decisive goal came when the …
