15 Rounds to Go Around, Phantoms Defeat Senators in Shootout

It only took Garrett Roe 59 minutes and 59.7 seconds to tie the game, and it only took 15 rounds of a shootout for Mark Alt to score the game-winning goal, leading the Phantoms to victory over the Binghamton Senators by a score of 2-1 Sunday afternoon at the Glens Falls Civic Center. Pat Cannone broke the stalemate early in the third period for Binghamton (42-24-1-6) with a helper from Hugh Jessiman. Despite the loss, Marc Cheverie had a good outing posting 27 saves through 59 minutes of play. “Now when was the last time you saw a more exciting …

Sanctions will not tarnish Winterhawks’ season if they win the Memorial Cup

Thanksgiving is supposed to be a time of giving and appreciating the bounties accumulated over the past year. Less than a week after this gluttonous holiday, the Western Hockey League presented the Portland Winterhawks with a trip to the backyard deep fryer. WHL commissioner Ron Robison announced on November 28 that the league suspended the Winterhawks for a series of violations of WHL regulations. Over the past four seasons Portland has been skating by without penalty, but now that they are the best team in the WHL the sanctions emerge, seemingly at a peculiar time. The league found that Portland …

Falcons soar over Phantoms with 3-2 victory

Scott Laughton and Mark Alt each earned their first American Hockey League points in their debuts with the Adirondack Phantoms, but it wasn’t enough as the Springfield Falcons skated away with a 3-2 victory Friday night at the Glens Falls Civic Center. Trent Vogelhuber gave Springfield (42-20-9) the early lead in the first with assists from David Savard and Jake Hansen. Nick Holden added a score, while Spencer Machacek would go on to score the game-winning goal in the third. Allen York recorded 27 saves on 29 shots and added another mark to his win column. Jason Akeson tied the …

Laughton to finish out season with Phantoms

The strange and wonderful hockey journey of Scott Laughton continues on Thursday, as the organization pressed the “up” button on his elevator and announced he will spend the remainder of the season with the Phantoms on an amateur tryout contract. A Flyers insider first reported the news this morning. It’s a bit of a whirlwind for the youngster, who on Monday was given a five-game suspension by the Ontario Hockey League for an illegal hit while playing for the Oshawa Generals. Laughton, who made the Flyers’ roster off an abbreviated training camp before being sent back to juniors, was given …

Grossmann out 2-3 weeks with concussion

The Season of Wither for the Flyers defense corps continues, with the revelation that Nicklas Grossmann will miss an additional 2-to-3 weeks with a concussion. The news is not new, nor has it been released by the club officially, but multiple reports have stated the case along with the updated timetable on Wednesday. Grossmann has been out since March 18 — a 4-2 road loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning — with what has been called an upper-body injury. The 28-year-old Swede enjoyed a good run in his first “full” season with Philadelphia, with a goal and four points along …

Atlantic Watch: Flyers aren’t out yet, Pens clinch the division, Islanders sit in seventh, Devils endure long losing streak

The Philadelphia Flyers entered this week on a winning streak, but they left it on a losing skid and can now only hope they receive some help to make the postseason. The Flyers won their third straight game on Wednesday night with a 5-3 comeback decision over the Montreal Canadiens in Philly. Wayne Simmonds tied the game with a little over five minutes left before Erik Gustafsson’s first …

College Hockey Roundup: Frozen Four Preview and Predictions; Whitehead ousted at Maine

This week I’m taking a look at each match up and make my prediction for each. (Full disclosure I had two of the Frozen Four teams in my original predictions here. UMass-Lowell and St. Cloud State).  For any of the four teams involved in the tournament, a win on Saturday night would clinch a first ever-national championship. Yale is the only team ever to advance this far and that was back in 1952. This tournament marks the first time the national semifinals do not feature at least one of Boston College, Boston University, Denver, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota or Wisconsin. No. 3 …

Seth-Jones

Will fate send Seth Jones to Colorado, or will Philadelphia find its future?

At first glace it would appear that Joe Sakic and Seth Jones have very little in common.                       Sakic was born in Burnaby, BC, with the sole purpose of playing ice hockey. Jones was born in Plano, TX to a former NBA player. Now an assistant coach for the Brooklyn Nets, Popeye Jones was a budding professional basketball player in 1993 when his career took him to Dallas. Coincidently, the Minnesota North Stars moved to Dallas, becoming the Stars that same year. Mike Modano provided scintillating performances for the new …
