Future Flyers Report: Laughton and Leier lead the way in offensive production

The pair of Scott Laughton and Taylor Leier have played the most games out of any of the Philadelphia Flyers’ prospects, and they are averaging over a point per game in the process. Ironically for both players, neither of them lead their junior teams in scoring. Laughton has 11 goals and eight helpers in the Oshawa Generals’ first 11 games this season. The forward sits third on the Generals in scoring, as the pair of Michael Dal Colle, who has 23 points, and Josh Sterk, who has 20 points, sit in front of him. Laughton does, however, have the highest …

North American Hockey Roundup: Anthony Mantha is a stud; The Erie Otters are for real; Providence moves up in NCAA rankings

When the Detroit Red Wings selected Anthony Mantha with the 20th overall pick in this past year’s draft they got the best pure goal scorer in the 2013 draft class according to numerous scouts. He certainly has not disappointed so far this season with the Val-d’Or Foreurs of the QMJHL. Mantha currently leads the QMJHL in scoring with 18 goals and 33 points in 12 games played. Right now, he’s too good to play in the QMJHL. How he fell to #20 is crazy and is something I will never understand. He should be in the AHL with Grand Rapids, but since …

Nittany Lions swept by Air Force; Set to face RIT and Vermont this weekend

The first road trip of the year for the Penn State Nittany Lions did not go according to plan. Penn State drop both games to the Air Force Academy 5-2 and 3-1 last Friday and Saturday respectively. Friday night’s contest was a flat out disappointment. Penalties once again plagued Guy Gadowsky’s squad early on as sophomore David Glen was whistled for slashing less than five minutes into the game.  Scott Holm would give the Falcons a 1-0 lead on the powerplay as Cole Gunner sent a pass from the right corner to Chad Demers in front who tipped it on …

Despite Great Play, Falcons Clip Phantoms in Shootout

An incredibly strong game by the Adirondack Phantoms (1-3-0-2), unfortunately lead to a shootout loss to the undefeated Springfield Falcons (5-0-0-0). Nick Cousins scored his second goal in back-to-back games and Rob Bordson contributed a goal, but it was not enough. Yann Danis was very solid in net, stopping 27 of 29 shots — including a couple really nice glove saves and a diving play that could have changed the momentum of the game in the Falcons’ favor. The Phantoms jumped out to the early lead when Chris VandeVelde skated down the slot with the puck, dumping it back to …

2014 Draft Eligibles: USHL Preliminary Top 10

The USHL is the top junior hockey league in the United States and the league consists of 16 teams primarily in the mid-western United States. Over the last 10 years, the USHL has become a factory and a pipeline to the NHL. Currently, 213 USHL alumni are playing in the NHL and 211 USHL players have college commitments already this season. The USHL will never be as strong as the CHL in terms of pure firepower and prestige in my opinion, but it has become a viable option for many European players who want to become exposed to the style …
