Giroux Showing Improvement in the Faceoff Circle

At one point in early April, Claude Giroux strung together a fairly dominant 10 games in the faceoff circle, winning just under 60 percent of his draws over that span. After posting seasons of 49.5% and 50% in his first 2 full seasons in the NHL, it got me wondering if he was on his way to a tangible, sustainable improvement. One of the things I admire about Sidney Crosby is that he entered the league quite poor in the faceoff department, at roughly 45%. He then worked at it and now normally comes in at a good 55-56%. Giroux …

This Week in Flyers History 5/13-5/19

Welcome to the final installment for this season of This Week in Flyers History, which seeks to fill in the gaps in fans’ collective memories and to give them a hand up when their friends question their hockey knowledge. We’ll be back in October with lots more facts, figures and pictures to stoke the fires of all things past. In the meantime, don’t forget to check out my series on the 1987 Stanley Cup Finals, beginning this coming Thursday. Flyers 2011-2012 Season: Done

The Lulz feature was originally inspired by the lolcats site but features hockey pictures with funny, quirky, ironic or just plain mean captions. This feature should run weekly on Fridays; TGIFWL (Thank Goodness It’s Friday With Lulz).

Holmgren, Laviolette speak 5/10/12

Courtesy of the Philadelphia Flyers Flyers General Manager Paul Holmgren Q: Can you start with the injuries and the surgeries? “Well the actual exit medicals aren’t until tonight so I don’t really have the complete list, I’ll get that to you guys as soon as I have it, but there will be a few guys who will need some surgeries.” Q: Can you give us an update on Chris Pronger and if you think there’s any chance he could return next season “Update, he’s doing probably the same and any chance of returning, I would say your guess is as …

Flyers talk at closedown day

Courtesy of the Philadelphia Flyers Flyers center Claude Giroux Q: What do you see moving forward that you didn’t see two days ago? “Everything happens pretty fast. It is not a good feeling when the season is over like that. Especially when you know our team could have made more damage. At the same time, we are a very young team and going into the beginning of the season with all of the new faces, new team and the way that this team came together, we had a pretty good season and got to second round. I think that is …

Negadelphia: Fixing The Philadelphia Flyers

***Negadelphia is an exercise where I channel the opinions of Philly’s worst into a post. No idiots were harmed in the making of this post, unfortunately.*** Another year and no Stanley Cup for the Philadelphia Flyers.  I’m getting fed up with this garbage!  These underachieving losers have a lot to do in the offseason if they actually want to be contenders.

Mark, Azia, Ella, and Gordie Howe

Behind the Crest: Gordie, Mark, and Azia Howe

Hockey enthusiasts could tell you a thing or two about Gordie and Mark Howe. They know all about “Mr. Hockey” and his son, widely considered to be one of the greatest defensemen of all time. They can give you a laundry list of reasons as to why both men were so deserving of their respective Hall of Fame inductions. But someone very close to them, someone who knows both very well, can’t recall much of their careers. “To be totally honest, I can’t tell you my grandfather’s or father’s stats. I know from other people that they were both great …

RICE & MICE: Tennis Elbow

Since I previously wrote about medial epicondylitis, or golfer’s elbow, I’d like to move over to the other side of the elbow to the lateral epicondyle. Lateral epicondylitis, or tennis elbow, is an overuse injury to the tendons that connect the forearm muscles to bone located on the outer aspect, the thumb side, of the elbow. These tendons help you move your wrist and fingers. When the tendon is over stressed or strained and repeatedly pull and tug at their point of attachment on the bone, lateral epicondylitis may develop. As with medial epicondylitis, lateral epicondylitis is not a tendinitis, but …

The All-Timers

Let’s face it, last night’s first period produced one of the most unexpected, bitter, deflating moments in Flyers playoff history. Anyone who knows me in the real world or through this site knows that a) I’m not one to wallow in the failure of a sports team and b) history is never too far away, so I thought 24 hours after the start of Game 5, it’s a perfect time to provide perspective and reminisce about some of the other plays in recent postseasons past (1980 forward) which will live in infamy in the hearts and minds of the Faithful. …
