In the first game of the series that produced less than seven goals total, the Pens held on for a 3-2 victory in Pittsburgh tonight. After they fell into a 3-0 hole in the series, the Pens have rattled off two straight wins to force Game 6 after their first win in a game of importance against the Flyers at the CONSOL Energy Center since it opened. The National Hockey League released its finalists for the Calder Trophy this morning, and Matt Read isn’t on the list. Instead, Colorado’s Gabriel Landeskog, Adam Henrique of the New Jersey Devils and #1 overall pick Ryan Nugent-Hopkins of Edmonton garnered the top three slots. Although much of the media assumed the series was over, the Pittsburgh Penguins came out and reminded everyone they’re still alive with an impressive 10-3 victory over the Flyers at the Wells Fargo Center tonight. Jordan Staal recorded a hat trick including the game-winner, which came late in the first period, while Evgeni Malkin had two goals and an assist for a three-point performance. A step in the right direction on the road to recovery. This could be huge for the Flyers. James van Riemsdyk is nearing a return from the fractured bone in his foot. Likely, he will have missed a total of 19 regular season games, along with the first 4 games of the 1st round of the playoffs. Van Riemsdyk originally fractured the foot while blocking a shot on March 1and had surgery to fix the fractured area with a plate on March 6th. Following an interminable wait, the National Hockey League on Monday suspended Penguins forward Arron Asham four games — the balance of the current best-of-seven Eastern Quarterfinal — and James Neal has drawn a one-game ban for actions taken during Sunday’s 8-4 loss to the Flyers in Game 3.
