RICE & MICE: Rambling about “the dehydration”

Has anyone else been lost without a hockey game to watch for the past three days? Thank goodness the NHL’s “second season” starts tonight. Due to the parity in the league, there is a very real chance that each playoff series could go to seven games and each game has a very real potential to go to overtime. There are no shootouts in the playoffs; only sudden death. Mental and physical preparation and recovery during each day of the postseason are vital to a team’s success. Last season there were 22 games that went to overtime in the postseason and …

Atlantic Watch: 4/4-4/10

The Flyers finished their 2011-12 regular season with a pair of games that didn’t have any kind of effect on the standings, as they beat the Buffalo Sabres and lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins. It’s those same Penguins that the Flyers will play in the 2012 Eastern Conference Quarterfinals, which starts tonight. Philly’s final home game of the regular season was also their final win, as they beat the visiting Sabres 2-1 on Thursday night. Ville Leino may have had a disappointing year, but he recorded his eighth of the year and second against the Flyers in the second period …

Flight Plan – Playoff Edition – 04.08.2012

Now Boarding: After a lengthy and costly 82-game trek, the Philadelphia Flyers find themselves in the fifth spot in the Eastern Conference ready to square off against their cross-state rivals in a Keystone State showdown with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Up until the last few weeks, the rivalry with the Penguins had begun to cool down a bit. The Flyers have had the upper hand in the past two season series as they won four of six games this year and last year thanks to a strong showing in the Western part of the Commonwealth. Over the past two games though, …

Point/Counterpoint: Bringing JVR Back

Welcome to the newest edition of “Point/Counterpoint,” where a pair of Flyers Faithful scribes present both sides of one particular issue with their own unique view and flair. This week, Steve J. and Hal G. square off over whether or not the Flyers should rush James van Riemsdyk back to play in the playoffs. First up Steve: At one point we were talking about James van Riemsdyk being ready for the middle of the first round of the playoffs.  Now JVR has suffered another setback and probably won’t even play in the first round.  As a young player with a good sized …

Around the Net 04.10.2012

Welcome to Around the Net, a weekly look through linkage at the Philadelphia Flyers and other news from around the NHL. It’s the most wonderful time of the year… Playoff previews abound and everyone has a prediction.[Broad Street Hockey][Of Ice and Men] [The Hockey Writers] [Broad Street Hockey] My take on the Flyers-Penguins series is: Philly has played very well against the Pens all year and haven’t lost a meaningful game in Pittsburgh yet (Saturday’s glorified exhibition  doesn’t count). This Flyers team is not afraid of the Pens like they might have been 3 to 4 years ago. They know they can …

Minor League Update: 4/2-4/8

With one week left in the AHL regular season, the Phantoms find themselves within reach of the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Adirondack sits in 10th with 76 points, which is one less than both the eighth place Manchester Monarchs (Los Angeles Kings’ AHL affiliate) and ninth place Portland Pirates (Phoenix Coyotes). The Monarchs have a Game in Hand over both the Phantoms and Pirates, as Adirondack finishes the 2011-2012 season with a pair of home games. To start the week, the Phantoms beat the Albany Devils (New Jersey) 3-2 on Friday in Adirondack. As they entered …

Penguins Finally Beat Flyers At CONSOL Energy Center 4-2

Today’s game may have not meant much in the standings, but the Flyers could have done two things in their 4-2 road loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins: remain perfect at the CONSOL Energy Center and keep Evgeni Malkin from reaching the 50-goal mark. Philly failed to do either, as Brayden Schenn and Jaromir Jagr tallied in the loss that dropped the Flyers’ record to 47-26-9 for the 2011-2012 regular season. “Wasn’t a good game, no question about it from both sides,” Jagr said. “You might have to face them seven times the next two weeks. The loss, as well as Malkin’s …
