On April 1, 2013 the Flyers traded away Harry Zolnierczyk. The members of the Flyers have been trained to lose all identity so they could dissolve into one cohesive orange and black unit. As expected, the Flyers have re-upped goaltender Steve Mason. The club revealed on Monday morning that it’s a one-year extension worth a reported $1.5 million. Mason came over from the Columbus Blue Jackets in a trade deadline deal last Wednesday for Michael Leighton and a third-round draft pick in 2015, and made his Philly debut in the third period of a 4-1 loss at Winnipeg on Saturday. The 24-year-old is due $3.2 million this season and was scheduled to become a restricted free agent in July. Cap-friendly deal? Yep. Primed for controversy? Also yes. As playoffs chances dwindle, Timonen extension makes less sense

In early February the Philadelphia Flyers extended the heart of their defense corps, Kimmo Timonen, for one season. At the time, there was a fair share of debate as to whether it was the right move. As the Flyers inch closer to missing the playoffs, my distaste for the decision increases. From a hockey perspective, it made perfect sense to re-sign the 38 year old defenseman. Mark Alt joined the Philadelphia Flyers’ organization just before the beginning of this shortened NHL season began back in the middle of January. In a deal that also brought Brian Boucher back to Philly, the Orange and Black also acquired Alt from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for forward Luke Pither.Alt spent this season with the University of Minnesota, a squad that was upset by the Yale Bulldogs in the opening round of the NCAA tournament. Philadelphia GM Paul Holmgren confirmed on Sunday morning that the club inked defenseman Mark Alt to an entry-level contract. He’ll be on an amateur tryout deal for the remainder of this season with the Adirondack Phantoms, and his pro contract is set to kick in next season. “It has been an honor to play for the Gophers for the last three years,” said Alt to Gophersports.com. “I want to thank the fans, my teammates and coaches for making it such a great experience. Phantoms comeback falls short in shootout loss to Rochester

Rochester’s Colin Jacobs recorded the deciding score, then Danny Syvret was not able to keep the Adirondack Phantoms alive in the shootout as they fell to the Americans by a 5-4 count on Saturday night at the Glens Falls Civic Center. Rochester (38-27-4) saw goals from Patrick Rissmiller, Frederick Roy, Drew Schiestel and Mark Mancari in regulation. David Leggio was a monster in net for the Americans, posting 39 saves on 43 shots and stopping four of five shootout chances. Mancari also had a goal in the shootout.
