Depleted Flyers sunk by spunky Hurricanes

It’s only November, so you might be able to excuse Peter Laviolette’s club if they underperform in a relatively meaningless early-season home game. Still, it was hard to fathom that the Carolina Hurricanes came into Philadelphia and laid a 4-2 licking on the Flyers Monday night. After all, the ‘Canes played on Sunday night (a 3-2 win over Toronto) and traveled north less than 24 hours later. But without the services of Chris Pronger (virus) and Braydon Coburn (upper-body injury), the visitors were able to put a stranglehold on the game early and hang on for the victory. Alexei Ponikarovsky …

Future Flyers Report

The Future Flyers Weekly Report follows the weekly progress of Flyers prospects playing in the various hockey leagues. Forwards: Nick Cousins remains the Flyers best scoring prospect in juniors. He collected his 26th-30th points with a goal and 3 assists over two games. Marcel Noebels and Brendan Ranford each picked up an assist this week. Jason Akeson led the Phantoms prospects in scoring with 4 goals and an assist in three games. He now sits at second in goals, assists, and points for the Phantoms. Mike Testwuide exploded with a 4 assist weekend after a slow start to the season. …

3 on 3 for the week of 11.20.2011

Welcome once again to 3-on-3, where we take a statistical look at the Philadelphia Flyers and their performance for the past week. The Fly Guys won 3 out of 4 games last week , getting 6 out of a possible 8 points, good enough to gain a share of first place in the Eastern Conference with Pittsburgh. Let’s see who were this week’s “hot” and “not” Flyers: 3 “Hot”: Matt Read – The young rookie from Bemidji State University continues to position himself as a rookie of the year candidate. He scored 5 goals and added an assist in 4 …

Flight Plan Week of 11.20.2011

The Philadelphia Flyers were on a pretty good run, collecting points in eight straight games. That streak dated all the way back to October 27 when they played the Winnipeg Jets in a wild game where 17 goals were scored and the Flyers ended up losing 9-8. As fate would have it, their most recent loss in regulation would also come at the hands of the Jets, by a score of 6-4 on Saturday. For some reason, Peter Laviolette cannot win games against either the Jets or the Atlanta Thrashers, doing so only once in his tenure as the head …

Jets work up big lead, hold on to down Flyers

The Winnipeg Jets played like a turbo booster propelled their skates during the first half of Saturday’s matinee. Good thing Ondrej Pavelec played the whole time. Despite rolling up a 5-1 advantage roughly midway through regulation thanks to a parade of defensive miscues and penalties by Philadelphia, the Jets fell prey to their own defensive follies but managed to escape with a 6-4 victory at MTS Centre. Bryan Little scored twice, Dustin Byfuglien notched a goal and two assists, while Nik Antropov netted a key empty-net score late for Winnipeg. Pavelec wound up with 27 stops in the contest, though …

Howe’s #2 to be retired on March 6

And then there was five. Mark Howe will join the ranks of the illustrious in Flyers history, as he will have his #2 retired by the club prior to their March 6 game against the Detroit Red Wings, according to multiple sources. Makes sense, right? It will close a gap of 22 almost years since the last number was raised to the roof, then at the Spectrum, when Bill Barber saw his #7 elevated early in the 1990-91 season. Howe didn’t win a Stanley Cup during his 10-season tenure in Philadelphia, and he’ll be the first player so honored that didn’t …

Fans and liking other teams

At the moment, I’m waiting on the Flyers/Coyotes game to start. And debating on if two cookies should count for dinner or not. The thing about having Gamecenter Live is that I don’t get any of the pregame stuff. So as local Philadelphians talk about pregame interviews and such, I’m stuck, staring at a blank Word document. I have a Coyotes shirt, actually. Never mentioned it before on here, but I used to follow the Yotes. Not as faithfully as the Flyers, of course, but two of my five live NHL games last year were Coyotes games. My family and …

It’s All In the Stache

The Lulz feature was originally inspired by the lolcats site but features hockey pictures with funny, quirky, ironic or just plain mean captions. This feature should run weekly on Fridays; TGIFWL (Thank Goodness It’s Friday With Lulz).

Read Scores In Last Minute To Give Flyers Win Over Phoenix

Matt Read scored with just 18.6 seconds left in regulation to help Ilya Bryzgalov beat his former team as the Flyers edged the Coyotes 2-1. Bryzgalov limited his former team to a single goal on 31 shots, while Read registered his second game-winning score within the last three games. Claude Giroux provided his 12th assist of the season with the primary helper on James van Riemsdyk’s tally which opened the scoring in the second period, which gives him the team lead in that category. Mikkel Boedker lit the lamp early in the third, and Mike Smith stopped 40 Flyers shots, but it was not enough …

RICE & MICE: My thoughts on the NHL and player safety

I was listening to Mike and Mike in the Morning on ESPN Radio on the way to work as I always do and were some very good points made a couple of weeks ago, both by Cris Carter and Mark Schlereth about player safety in NFL that I think cross over and may be applied to the NHL as well. Effort should be made by training staff and coaching staff to protect the players from themselves. We all know most players will try to shake it off and continue to play, but if a player looks a bit unsteady after …
