Briere Caps Flyers’ Comeback In Overtime Against Struggling Isles
It’s not how you start, but how you finish. The Flyers lived up to that motto on Thanksgiving Eve as they overcame an early 3-1 deficit in New York to beat the Islanders 4-3 in overtime. Danny Briere scored the Flyers’ final two goals, while Sergei Bobrovsky relieved Ilya Bryzgalov after the first period and didn’t allow a single goal on 23 shots. Both Scott Hartnell and Braydon Coburn had two points on the night while the Flyers extended their winning streak against the Islanders to seven games. At the end of the first minute, the game was tied. However, instead of the …
The ‘How’ of Homer
When Paul Holmgren took over as the general manager of the Philadelphia Flyers on October 22, 2006, I received numerous messages from my friends who grew up as fans of the Hartford Whalers. Those messages ranged from, “Good luck with that,” to “What a terrible choice” to the simple but poignant, “Bwahahahahaha.” These were people jaded by the abysmal record that the Whalers posted during his tenure as Hartford’s coach and his brief stint as GM in the years that eventually led up to Hartford’s relocation to Carolina. (His DUI and stint at Betty Ford likely did not help matters …
Atlantic Watch: 11/16-11/22
Matt Read provided an excellent game-winning goal for the Flyers on Thursday, but that was the only good news Philly received all week as they are currently enduring a two-game losing streak with several key players missing the lineup in the process. Chris Pronger, Braydon Coburn, and Jaromir Jagr are important players on the Flyers’ roster. Jagr plays an important role in Philly’s most productive offensive trio, while the defense must rely on AHL call-ups when both Pronger and Coburn are absent from the lineup. Negative results were witnessed when all these players were not available at the same time …
Schenn comes off LTIR as Flyers shuffle roster again
The never-ending merry-go-round of daily salary-cap compliance continued on Tuesday, as the Flyers activated center Brayden Schenn from long-term injured reserve and promptly assigned him to Adirondack of the American Hockey League. Schenn was expected to miss 4-to-6 weeks after suffering a broken left foot while blocking a shot during an October 26 game in Montreal. Prior to the setback, the former first-round pick of the Kings went scoreless in four games with Philly. Schenn earned a call-up after collecting four goals and four assists in four games with the Phantoms at the start of the year. In addition, the …
Tapping the Pipes 11/22/11
With a little over a quarter of the season in the books, the Flyers continued their foray through the Southeast Division this week, capping off a stretch during which 7 of their 11 opponents reside there. But first, the Flyers welcomed Ilya Bryzgalov’s former team into Philadelphia: the Phoenix Coyotes. Whether or not Bryzgalov had heard the less-than-flattering opinions that former teammates Adrian Aucoin and Derek Morris expressed about him, he certainly took a step toward shutting them up. After an evenly played two periods of hockey, the Flyers were riding a 1-0 lead thanks to James van Riemsdyk’s 7th goal of …
Point/Counterpoint: Heavyweights are unnecessary in the new NHL
Point/Counterpoint is a new series that argues both sides of a topic relevant to the Philadelphia Flyers. This week, Dain S and Jim discuss whether the heavyweight enforcer is needed in today’s NHL. Point by Dain S: Muhammad Ali. Mike Tyson. Those names inspire awe and conjure up images of the “baddest man on the planet,” the heavyweight champion. In hockey, the heavyweight enforcer has also been a fixture of the NHL since the 70’s when the Flyers constructed a team filled with tough guys and skill players, changing the game forever while winning consecutive Stanley Cups. However, in today’s NHL, the …
Depleted Flyers sunk by spunky Hurricanes
It’s only November, so you might be able to excuse Peter Laviolette’s club if they underperform in a relatively meaningless early-season home game. Still, it was hard to fathom that the Carolina Hurricanes came into Philadelphia and laid a 4-2 licking on the Flyers Monday night. After all, the ‘Canes played on Sunday night (a 3-2 win over Toronto) and traveled north less than 24 hours later. But without the services of Chris Pronger (virus) and Braydon Coburn (upper-body injury), the visitors were able to put a stranglehold on the game early and hang on for the victory. Alexei Ponikarovsky …

Welcome once again to 3-on-3, where we take a statistical look at the Philadelphia Flyers and their performance for the past week. Let’s see who were this week’s “hot” and “not” Flyers: 3 “Hot”: Matt Read – The young rookie from Bemidji State University continues to position himself as a rookie of the year candidate.
