Pronger to IR; Harry Z and Holmstrom recalled

In a move that was not unexpected, the Flyers placed defenseman and team captain Chris Pronger on injured reserve Tuesday, eight days after suffering a serious right eye injury. Pronger has been sidelined since absorbing the full force of a follow-through from Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mikhail Grabovski on October 24. After initial examination, the 37-year-old was slated to miss 2-3 weeks while recovering. “I think he’ll get cleared to push it harder and probably get on the ice by himself in the next few days and maybe by the end of the week get on the ice with the …

Jágr doesn’t care about points

He tapped with his stick and when he got the puck, he shot it. With every game back in North America, Jaromír Jágr is getting better and better in his shooting performance. After two goals — his first of the year — against Toronto on Monday, he added another one against Montreal two days later. It’s definitely good for every hockey player when he finally scores — proving that even 39-year-olds who have been away for three years still retain the fire and the skill to compete at the NHL level. “I hope that I’m going to continue,” he said. …

Future Flyers Weekly Report

The Future Flyers Weekly Report follows the weekly progress of Flyers prospects. Forwards: In juniors this week, Brendan Ranford recorded a goal and an assist in both games. Nick Cousins registered a point in each of his three games to finish with a goal and two assists. Marcel Noebels and Derek Mathers were kept off the scoreboard. For the Phantoms, Tye McGinn scored his first professional goal which was also his first professional point. Eric Wellwood and Harry Zolniercyzk both ended up scoring two goals a piece. Jason Akeson, Luke Pither, and Tom Sestito also collected two points on the …

3 on 3 for the week of 10.30.2011

Welcome to this week’s 3-on-3. This week, I will be adding Corsi to my weekly stat analysis. Corsi is a stat that measures shots for and against while a player is on the ice, so the theory is the higher the Corsi, the more effective the player is and the more value he has to his team. The Flyers had an up and down week, defeating Toronto 4-2 on Monday, then dropping back-to-back contests, 5-1 in Montreal on Wednesday and a 9-8 scorefest with Winnipeg on Thursday. The Orange and Black then rebounded with a solid victory Saturday against Carolina by a 5-1 …

Flight Plan Week of 10.30.2011

The Philadelphia Flyers split their four games this week. After a big win over the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Flyers dropped a bad one to the Montreal Canadiens where they looked all sorts of out of sorts against a team who was desperate for a win. Then, the Flyers continued looking discombobulated up until the end of the second period against the Winnipeg Jets in a crazy 17-goal back-and-forth shoot out at the Wells Fargo Center, the Jets barely getting out of dodge with a win they should have had locked up. Wrapping up the week, Philadelphia was able to …

David Wilkinson: Bringing sports memories to life

As a Flyers fan of a certain age, I can only imagine what it would have been like for David Wilkinson to be sitting at his kitchen table, across from one Brian Propp. If you are a fan over the age of 30, you may remember “Propper” as the hard- working slick-skating forward for the Flyers who bridged the gap between the end of the Broad Street Bullies Era and the Mike Keenan/Paul Holmgren years, or possibly as one of the team’s radio broadcasters in recent years. The events that led to this meeting trace back to Berlin, New Jersey. …

Hockey Makes Me Crazy

Thursday’s game vs. the Jets. Nuff said. (taken from google images) Sometimes all you want is for your team to play like they mean it.  Always and forever, go Flyers. P.S. I still love Bobrovsky. And I think there must have been a full moon Thursday night. Metaphorically anyway.

Why You Heff to Be Here?

The Lulz feature was originally inspired by the lolcats site but features hockey pictures with funny, quirky, ironic or just plain mean captions. This feature should run weekly on Fridays; TGIFWL (Thank Goodness It’s Friday With Lulz).

Flyers Drop Hectic, Offensive Game To Jets 9-8

Overcoming a four-goal deficit, scoring three goals early in the third period, and taking part in a game with 17 goals overall unfortunately meant just one thing for the Philadelphia Flyers tonight – an incredible 9-8 loss to the Winnipeg Jets. Tanner Glass, Blake Wheeler, and Nik Antropov all had three points for the former Thrashers tonight as the visitors registered a symmetrical three goals in each period. Despite allowing seven goals on 43 shots and being pulled once, Ondrej Pavelec got the win for Winnipeg, which was kicking off a seven-game road trip which will take it through the Southeast Division.  Kimmo Timonen (4A) and …

Schenn to miss 4-6 weeks with broken foot

The unquiet slumber of the early part of this 2011-12 season continued on Thursday, as Flyers GM Paul Holmgren confirmed that Brayden Schenn suffered a broken foot and will miss 4-to-6 weeks. Schenn apparently suffered the injury when taking a shot off his left foot in Wednesday’s 5-1 loss in Montreal. Several sources reported that he was already in a walking boot by the time the club packed up to return to Philadelphia. It’s an unexpected setback for the 20-year-old, who, despite not recording a point in four games with the big club this season, showed signs of the faith …
