For a player who wasn’t drafted, Ruslan Fedotenko has made a noticeable impact on North American hockey. Averaging less than a point every 2 games over his career (333 points in 743 games), Fedotenko has found a way to grab four game-winning scores for his team in the postseason. One of those actually clinched the Stanley Cup for the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2004, a year where — instead of die-hard Flyers fans celebrating the end of a Stanley Cup drought — Fedotenko and Dmitry Afanasenkov hoisted the Cup in Florida. Let’s look at what Fedotenko has done in addition …

Defending the Flyers
Well, I did it. Brought hockey into my lesson. Not relatable to Henry V, unfortunately. That would have been amazing. I’m making my 10th and 11th graders learn vocabulary. They hate it, I love it, so it’s a win-win. Our word a few days ago was acrimony, which means bitterness or animosity. In an effort to help them learn, I used it in a sentence, making it up right on the spot. “I have a lot of acrimony when I constantly have to defend why I’m a Flyers fan. To everyone.” (Right, so it’s not the most eloquent of sentences, but …

Thoughts on the Yaroslavl tragedy
I never want to wake up to news like this, whether it’s about family, friends, relatives or a hockey player I only met once but whom I admired for years as a kid. When I wiped the crust out of my eyes and pressed the buttons on my phone to find a text from our intrepid editor Marcello D this morning, I felt like another part of my childhood had been ripped away, like tearing a photograph out of an album and letting it be blown off on a malicious wind. Brad McCrimmon, dead at age 52, along with the entire Yaroslavl Lokomotiv club …

At long last, the 2012 show. Ending months of speculation, the Philadelphia Flyers confirmed that the 2012 Winter Classic will take place in Philadelphia, at Citizens Bank Park, between the New York Rangers and the Flyers. The news was broken in a letter to season-ticket holders, according to Sarah Baicker of CSNPhilly.com. The story on the website also confirmed that tickets to the game will not be part of ticket packages, and must be purchased separately. But the new twist is that the game is scheduled for January 2, breaking the brief four-year tradition of the league’s premiere outdoor contest being played on …

Former Philadelphia Flyers defenseman and long-time NHL blueliner Brad McCrimmon has died in a plane crash in Western Russia on Wednesday morning. The plane, carrying members of the Yaroslavl Lokomotiv club of the Kontinental Hockey League on its way for a game in Minsk, Belarus, crashed just after takeoff, killing all passengers. McCrimmon had signed on as the club’s head coach in May following a successful three-year stint as an assistant with the Detroit Red Wings. “I’m personally …
Then and Now: Scottie Upshall
In an attempt to return the last place Flyers back to the playoffs in just one season, Paul Holmgren was aggressive in his first couple months as GM back in 2006-2007. In addition to attaining Braydon Coburn, Lasse Kukkonen, and Martin Biron, Holmgren used Peter Forsberg and the pick Nashville originally gave the Flyers in exchange for Forsberg to rob the Predators of Scott Hartnell, Kimmo Timonen, Ryan Parent, and Scottie Upshall. As Hartnell and Timonen remain a part of the Flyers’ organization, Parent and Upshall left after playing multiple seasons in Philly. Parent is currently in Vancouver while Upshall has bounced around since …

I know Paul, he’s pretty fast on that bike so he probably …
