The Flyers announced on Tuesday afternoon that they have agreed to a multi-year contract extension with New Jersey native and forward James vanRiemsdyk. Terms have not been announced, but vanRiemsdyk reported via his Twitter account that the pact is for six years. He would have been a restricted free agent at the end of this season, after making $875,000 per year on his initial three-year entry-level deal. The 22-year-old tallied career highs of 21 goals and 40 points in 75 games for Philly during his sophomore season. He added seven goals in 11 playoff contests. A product of the University of New …

NHL 12 demo review
Upon first glance, the demo for EA’s NHL 12 appears to be a retread of last year’s NHL 11. Sure, the songs may have changed and Chicago and Philadelphia have been replaced by Vancouver and Boston but on the whole, the game remains fairly status quo — and I’m OK with that. EA puts out a solid quality product and the developers are better off improving the game rather than continually reinventing it. The controls and gameplay are familiar, with minor tweaks made here and there. The first noticeable change to the game is the menu screen. A cleaner interface …
Flyers react to Hurricane Irene
Although the Philadelphia area was caught off guard this week when the tremors of an earthquake were felt throughout the region, the Philadelphia Flyers are fully prepared to counteract the effects of Hurricane Irene. Chris Pronger: After battling with the storm for a while in the corner, Pronger ultimately beats Hurricame Irene into submission with his elbow. Ilya Bryzgalov: According to sources in Phoenix, Bryzgalov will only fight off the storm when he feels like it and his ability to do so is overrated. Claude Giroux: As the storm approaches, Giroux puts on a dazzling display of moves to elude …
Poll: Will the pressure in Philadelphia get to Ilya Bryzgalov?
Ilya Bryzgalov has been known to disappear after bad games. In Philadelphia, he’ll be under much more of a microscope than he was in Phoenix, especially because of the demands that come along with such a weighty contract. How will he handle the pressure?
Then and Now: Patrick Sharp
The 2010 Stanley Cup Finals is something a Flyers’ fan never wants to think about. Adding on to the agony of coming so close to the Cup and the constant replaying of Patrick Kane’s weak goal line shot was the fact multiple former Flyers hurt them in the Finals. Ben Eager had the game-winning goal in Game 2, Kane, who never played for the Flyers but was selected first by the Chicago Blackhawks despite the Flyers having the worst record in the league, had eight points in the series (including three in Game 6), and Patrick Sharp had six points. …
Let’s Do The Time Warp Again
While us penguins continue to wilt in the usual Northeastern Summer heat, pining for the days when a cool iceberg awaits our collectively scorched behinds, thoughts about the upcoming (and too far off) season still seep their way into our Sun-addled brains. This is the final piece in a five-part series which intends to examine the ways the Flyers front office, though publicly professing to want to win the Cup by any means necessary, just ends up conducting business as usual year in and year out. Perk up your ears when you’re alarm goes off and the radio disrupts your reverie. Flip on the …
