While us penguins continue to wilt in the usual Northeastern Summer heat, pining for the days when a cool iceberg awaits our collectively scorched behinds, thoughts about the upcoming (and too far off) season still seep their way into our Sun-addled brains. This is the fourth in a five-part series which intends to examine the ways the Flyers front office, though publicly professing to want to win the Cup by any means necessary, just ends up conducting business as usual year in and year out. Once upon a time, Philly scribes new to this game of hockey spun wonderful tales of general manager …

MasterGame Theater
It’s time for another trip down the Orange-and-Black-flecked memory lane as we all drip with sweat from the heat of August in the city or the salt of the ocean at the Jersey shore…think about it, we’re less than two months from the start of the regular season… So, to get us all riled up and to recall the deep-seated hatred of our enemies, I thought I’d dip back into the playoff pool for this installment of MasterGame Theater. It is our honor to present to you Game 3 of the 1997 Eastern Conference Finals between the Flyers and New …
Poll: Are the Flyers a better team?
The Flyers made wholesale changes this offseason, resulting in a roster that bares little resemblance to anything we’ve seen since the lockout. Are they a better team, though?
Then and Now: Jim Vandermeer
Jim Vandermeer has played in 457 NHL games over his 10-year professional career. Of those 457, just 83 had been with the Philadelphia Flyers. Becoming a professional with the Philadelphia Phantoms in 2001, Vandermeer joined the Flyers’ roster a year later playing in several games for both clubs over the next two seasons. Since his playing days with Philly back in the 2003-2004 season, Vandermeer has played on several teams including a brief return to the Flyers. Let’s take a look at Vandermeer’s brief but well-traveled career. In February of 2004, Vandermeer’s first stint with the Flyers ended as he …

A constant in post-lockout Flyerville
In the book, Hockey Dad, Bob McKenzie discusses a concept he calls the “Hard Work Fairy”. “I only know I have an unwavering faith that if an individual works hard enough long enough at anything, good things will happen and there will be a reward,” writes McKenzie. “But the problem with the philosophy is that every hockey player of any age or ability always thinks he’s working hard, and most of them aren’t. Not even close.” McKenzie admits that the term is comical but the concept is a solid one. Work hard and your efforts will pay off eventually. No …
Poll: Will Sean Couturier play for the Flyers next season?
It was a surprise that Sean Couturier was still available when the Flyers selected him with the eighth overall pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. Had it not been for setbacks due to a bout with mononucleosis, Couturier could very have been one of the top three picks in the draft. Is he NHL ready? If so, is there a spot for him on the roster in Philly?
Then and Now: Ryan Potulny
His time with the Flyers may have spanned over three seasons, but Ryan Potulny only played 44 games for Philadelphia in his career. From 2005-2006 to 2007-2008, Potulny split his time between the Flyers and the Philadelphia Phantoms playing 144 games between both teams. Since the end of the 2007-2008 season, Potulny has suited up for six different teams since his time with the Orange and Black. Let’s look at Potulny then and now. In June of 2008, Potulny was sent to the Edmonton Oilers for defenseman Danny Syvret. Potulny spent most of the ’08-’09 season with Guillaume Lefebvre on the Oilers’ AHL affiliate, …
