Considering the possibility of a Bobrovsky trade
There’s something humorous about the fact that the Flyers waited until they had arguably their best goaltending prospect in ages before acquiring a bona fide starter. As a result, Sergei Bobrovsky, a once little-known goalie who posted solid numbers for Novokuznetsk Metallurg, a bad KHL team, ceased being the goalie of the future and became perceived as an overpaid, expendable backup in the mere bat of an eyelash. Barely a year after committing three years and nearly $3 million to Bobrovsky, it was reported that the Flyers began shopping him. It’s a long fall for someone who showed such promise and …
Renewing the case for Tim Kerr
With the recent announcement that former Flyers defenseman Mark Howe will be among the class enshrined this coming November into the Hockey Hall of Fame, it’s a given that thoughts will turn to other members of those 1980s teams who might deserve a shot at immortality. One such overlooked player is Tim Kerr, an oak of a man who patrolled the area around the crease and left defenders and goaltenders alike struggling for ways to stop him during the latter half of the decade. Below is a dressed-up re-print of a column I wrote for The Phanatic Magazine back in …
Some quick camp observations
Before today, I never literally found myself in a “you snooze, you lose” situation. After my first trip to development camp, I came home and napped for the first time in years. Yup, that’s right; I took a nap and it was awesome. I saw no urgent reason to rush to post something on camp, as I could offer little more than the meaningless observations I posted on Twitter earlier: Tom Sestito is big! Oliver Lauridsen is tall! Kevin Marshall and Erik Gustafsson know how to skate! So, I took time to collect my thoughts and actually sleep on it, …
Flyers sign Simmonds
This afternoon, the Flyers announced that the team signed winger, Wayne Simmonds, to a multi-year contract. Simmonds, 22, was acquired from the Los Angeles Kings in the Mike Richards trade. In 240 games, he has 39 goals and 54 assists. According to Tim Panaccio, the deal is for two years with a cap hit of $1.75 million.
Another One Bites the Dust
Once again, a minor-league hockey club within getaway distance has decided to fold its tent. The New Jersey Devils announced on Wednesday that their ECHL affiliate in Trenton will suspend operations, starting with the 2011-12 season. A release on the team’s website said the Devils are “restructuring the organization’s player development system to be more in line with other NHL franchises.” The Trenton Devils are the only club in the ECHL, which is the next tier down from the American Hockey League, which is wholly owned by their NHL parent club. Founded as the Trenton Titans in 1999 as an …
Then and Now: Radovan Somik
Alexander Selivanov will be remembered by most NHL fans as a decent winger for the Tampa Bay Lightning back in the mid 1990′s. Currently playing for Bietigheim-Bissingen SC of 2.GBun in Germany, Selivanov has experienced being traded twice in his career. One of those two trades was being shipped to Edmonton in exchange for the infamous Alexandre Daigle. His other trade, back on September 6, 1994, was before he even played a game in the NHL. Selivanov was transferred from Philly to Tampa Bay in exchange for a 4th round pick in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft. With that pick the Flyers …
Phantoms to switch divisions as AHL realigns
The American Hockey League took one more step towards mimicking the NHL on Tuesday, announcing a realignment plan that moves all 30 of its member clubs from four to six divisions. Adirondack, which had been placed in the eight-team East Division of the Eastern Conference last season, now moves into the newly-created Northeast Division but remains in the Eastern Conference. The Phantoms will be joined by the Albany Devils, Bridgeport Sound Tigers, Springfield Falcons and the re-branded Connecticut Whale. Here is the full breakdown, thanks to the AHL’s release: Eastern Conference Atlantic Division Manchester Monarchs (LA) Portland Pirates (PHX) Providence …
