RICE & MICE: ACL injuries

Last week I wrote about my experience as an athlete that had an anterior cruciate ligament injury. This week I’d like to cover the importance of the ACL and why the mere mention of an ACL injury strikes fear into many athletes. The ACL is one of the four major ligaments of the knee. The medial and lateral collateral ligaments are located on the inside and outside portion of the knee, respectively. The oft-injured ACL and its neighbor the posterior cruciate ligament are located inside the knee joint. Even though ACL injuries are not thought of as a common hockey …

North American Prospect Weekly Report (1/10 – 1/16)

The North American Prospect Report follows the weekly progress of Flyers prospects playing in the various leagues throughout North America. Forwards: Michael Chaput and Tye McGinn both continue to be red hot. Each had a 7 point performance this week. Chaput had a huge 2 goal, 3 assist performance in his first game. He scored an assist in his second game and a goal in his third. McGinn was quiet in his first game, but scored 3 and assisted on one in his second game, and scored and assisted on another in his third. Dave Labrecque had a quieter, but …

Flyers Hang On For 3-2 Win

The Flyers won 3-2 against the Rangers tonight, but it didn’t end gracefully. After going up 3-0 less than five minutes into the second period, the Flyers wouldn’t score for the remainder of the game. It seemed as though the Flyers would skate out the clock after a couple minutes were played in the third, but the Rangers had different plans. Brian Boucher allowed a soft Wojtek Wolski goal and a hungry Rangers team capitalized on the momentum scoring less than 3 minutes later to make it a one-goal game. Thanks to Boucher’s overall play, though, Philly hung on to …

Flight Plan week of 01.16.2011

The Philadelphia Flyers did pretty decently on last week’s road trip going 2-1-0. Their loss to the Boston Bruins was a bit hard to swallow but the team were absolutely able to wipe it from their memories by the time they arrived in Atlanta to face the Atlanta Thrashers the next day and won by a decisive 5-2 score.  The Flyers have four games this week and have five games coming up in their next eight days. Normally this would be a good thing for a team that clearly plays better when they have a bunch of games together rather …

Flyers Rally Late For 5-2 Win

The Flyers came to Atlanta looking to put the memory of Thursday’s bad third-period behind them. It took a little while longer than expected, but the Atlantic Division leaders came through with a 5-2 victory thanks to a three-goal burst in the final 20 minutes. As the period grew older, the time spent in Philly’s offensive zone grew larger. Strong forechecking and pressuring each Thrasher with the puck allowed the Flyers to stay in Atlanta’s defensive zone and recover several bad neutral zone passes. With just over seven minutes left in the game, the Flyers finally capitalized. Scott Hartnell worked …

Spectrum Memories: A view from above

To celebrate my 25th year of hockey fandom, I will occasionally step into the way-back machine and write about events in the Flyers’ past. For the balance of the season, I will be dipping into the well to ruminate about some things related to my love of the Philadelphia Flyers, and in general about the fan experience as a youngster. This is the fifth in the series of Spectrum Memories. As I’ve established in previous posts, I was a nosebleed dweller at the Spectrum throughout my youth. That was the deal if my parents were going to front the tickets for a whole season. Still, there were …

Bruins get last laugh over Flyers in high-octane contest

What do you get when you combine a record-setting snowstorm and two teams at the top of their respective divisions squaring off in a rare important January game? Apparently, total chaos. On a night which saw the Flyers carry a one-goal lead into the third period, little-known Steven Kampfer notched the game winner late in regulation as the Boston Bruins outlasted the Philadelphia Flyers, 7-5, in a wild, playoff-like contest at TD Garden. Mark Recchi, Zdeno Chara, Patrice Bergeron and Gregory Campbell all posted a goal and one assist for the Bruins, who won their third straight game and moved …

Five Reasons I Love the Flyers: Dan

Dan is a huge Flyers and overall hockey fan, contributing to The Home of Hockey blog every Friday, as well as its’ forum.  You can follow him on Twitter. 1. In My Blood Growing up, Flyers hockey was always a part of my life.  I grew up watching the Flyers on PRISM & Philly 57 with my dad and playing hand hockey during intermission.  He took me to games at the Spectrum every so often, and seeing the game live definitely kept me hooked.  He told me stories about the glory days in the ‘70s.  As I grew up, my …
