Christmas Eve: A time for reflection
By now I think you get the idea that I’m the historical standard-bearer for the site as I’m required to write about childhood experiences with hockey, or I’m dashing off the occasional piece comparing the plight of current athletes in the city to old-school Flyers. I want to continue in that vein this Christmas Eve, and lay out my own state of mind, as a fan, regarding how the 2010-11 Philadelphia Flyers season is progressing. The buzz around this team after playing less than one-half of their schedule is one that I don’t think has been as constant and as …
Our top posts of 2010
Flyers Faithful officially launched in August of 2010 and it turned out to be a great season to launch. Claude Giroux began a breakout season. Sergei Bobrovsky provided a sense of stability in net that the Flyers haven’t seen from a rookie in ages. The Flyers shot to the top of the standings and reached 20 wins the earliest since 1986. So far, so good. While the team enjoys some time off, let’s take a few minutes to recap the top Flyers Faithful stories of the year. Remembering Pelle Remembering Pelle is a five part series honoring the memory of …
RICE & MICE: (Medial) Collateral Damage
RICE & MICE will periodically review injuries that are common, uncommon or just plain unique in hockey. I hope to provide some insight to the “how’s, why’s, and when’s” of the injuries that might keep players out of the lineup. The medial collateral ligament or MCL is one of the oft injured ligaments in contact sports, especially ice hockey and football. As its name indicates, the MCL is on the medial or inside part of each knee. It is most often injured when contact is made to the lateral or outer portion of the knee, however the injury can also occur …
Panthers take down Flyers in rare lackluster Philly effort
It would be easy to see how the best team in the NHL playing at home, and one mired in last place in its division on a road swing, might produce record-setting results. The only problem is, the last-place Florida Panthers set the records, as 26 saves from Tomas Vokoun plus a late two-goal surge in the first period sent them to a shocking 5-0 victory over the Flyers on Monday night. Vokoun posted his first career shutout against Philadelphia, while Bill Thomas, Evgeny Dadonov, Shawn Matthias, Mike Santorelli and Dmitry Kulikov tallied for the visitors. It was the Panthers’ …
North American Prospect Weekly Report (12-13/12-19)
The North American Prospect Report follows the weekly progress of Flyers prospects playing in the various leagues throughout North America. Forwards: Tye McGinn was this weeks standout performer. He scored 2 goals and assisted on 5 others over three games which included two 3 point nights. Dave Labrecque also had a strong performance with a goal and an assist in each of his two games. Brendan Ranford scored 2 and assisted on 2 in the three he played. Michael Chaput finished with 3 (1 goal, 2 assists) points in 2 games. Ben Holmstrom was the leading scorer for the Phantoms …

Flight Plan Week of 12.19.2010
The Flyers are on a five-game winning streak. They’re 7-1-2 in their last 10. They have the highest goal differential in the entire NHL with a +35, which they lead every team in that category by at least nine goals. They have scored an Eastern Conference leading 117 goals in 34 games. And above all, they lead their division, their conference, and the whole league with 49 points. Bottom line: the Philadelphia Flyers are a good team, at least up till now. The Flyers have one more game before Santa comes and they’re looking for a stocking stuffer of two …
Spectrum memories: Holiday cheer/jeer
To celebrate my 25th year of hockey fandom, I will occasionally step into the way-back machine and write about events in the Flyers’ past. For the balance of the season, I will be dipping into the well to ruminate about some things related to my love of the Philadelphia Flyers, and in general about the fan experience as a youngster. This is the fourth in the series of Spectrum Memories. Much like the third installment in this series, my second batch of December recollections centers not around game attendance at the Spectrum, but on home and away games watched on …
Don’t Panic: Pronger out with broken foot
It wouldn’t be the middle of the season without some disconcerting news in Flyerland… Defenseman Chris Pronger is expected to be sidelined 4-to-6 weeks because of a broken foot. General manager Paul Holmgren said Pronger will undergo surgery to repair a broken first metatarsal in his right foot. The six-time All-Star was hurt late in the second period during Wednesday’s 5-3 victory in Montreal. Pronger leads all Philadelphia defensemen with four goals and has added 11 assists for 15 points in 31 games. He is also a plus-six for the NHL’s top team. The Flyers have a league-best 47 points …
