Flyers sign St. Lawrence’s Flanagan to ATO

Late last night, the report from Bob McKenzie from TSN of Canada was that the Flyers signed free agent forward Kyle Flanagan from St. Lawrence to an amateur tryout contract for the remainder of this season and a one-year deal for 2013-14. He is expected to report to Adirondack of the AHL by Friday at the latest. Flanagan, a native of the university town of Canton, New York, finished his senior season with 15 goals and 47 points in 32 games. His 47 points placed second on the club to junior phenom Greg Carey, who leads the country with 28 …

Reading’s Gill named ECHL’s top goaltender

Stepping into the shoes of Philipp Grubauer, who aided the Royals in their ascension to the top of the Eastern Conference before leaving for Hershey and the Capitals, hasn’t been easy for whomever spent time in the Reading crease in the second half of this season. Nonetheless, with Larry Courville’s club vying for the Brabham Cup and best record in the ECHL, Riley Gill has filled the vacancy beyond all expectations. On Tuesday, he was named the league’s top goalie for the week of March 11-17. The 28-year-old Minnesota native finished 3-0-0 with a 1.00 goals-against average and a .969 …

Six CHL free agents the Flyers should target

With the Ottawa Senators signing of Portland Winterhawks defensemen Troy Rutkowski the other day, and the Vancouver Canucks signing of Lake Superior State forward Kellan Lain, it got us here at Flyers Faithful thinking about who are some the top NCAA and junior hockey free agents available. Yesterday, Jared Abbott highlighted four NCAA free agents that could be a good fit for the Flyers. Today I’m taking a look at six Canadian Hockey League free agents that could be helpful for the Flyers and other NHL squads. I have profiled a forward and defenseman from both the Ontario Hockey League …

Stamkos and Lindback help Bolts edge Flyers in Tampa Bay

The Philadelphia Flyers lost another pivotal game tonight in Tampa Bay, as the Lightning handed the visitors a 4-2 loss. Teddy Purcell deposited the game-winner halfway through the third period, while Steven Stamkos recorded his 200th goal in the NHL in a two-point effort. Max Talbot and Claude Giroux were the only Flyers to beat Anders Lindback, as Tampa Bay’s goaltender made 28 stops for the victory. With the tilt tied at two midway through the third period, Purcell tipped home his sixth of 2013 to hand the Lightning two points tonight in Tampa Bay. Stamkos managed to grab a …

Deep Blue Line

KIMMO TIMONEN skates back and forth at the Flyers Skate Zone during practice. He is addressing his teammates before his 1,000th game.   KIMMO I know it’s been a difficult year. We haven’t played at our highest level. The Flyers nod solemnly in agreement.   KIMMO It’s my 1,000th game tonight. Zac Rinaldo can’t even count that high. ZAC RINALDO lights up smiling upon hearing his name.   RINALDO It’s true!   KIMMO It’s time to put all of our issues behind us. Four intriguing NCAA free agents who fit the Flyers’ mold

The Flyers have had recent success fishing the NCAA talent pool for late-bloomers and overlooked players. Matt Read and Harry Zolnierczyk are two of the current Flyers that took the academic route, playing four seasons each of NCAA hockey. Read is a small forward from Bemidji State University who came out of school at 24 years old. The Calgary native was named the CHA Rookie of the Year in 2007-08 and the CHA Player of the Year in 2009-10. As a senior captain in 2010-11, Read was named to the WCHA All-Academic Team. Read led all NHL rookies last season …

It’s time to say goodbye to dump and chase and emphasize puck possession

I’ve always been the kind of person to ask “why”. I tend to not just accept things as they are presented to me, but rather, I’d like to understand the nuances behind whatever it may be. I apply this same questioning to the game of hockey; and of late, particularly why the Flyers, and the game of ice hockey in general, can’t seem to rid itself of dump and chase and strongly emphasize puck possession. If you know me personally, you know that I’ve played roller hockey my entire life, into my young adulthood. I played ECRHA and AIHL hockey, …
