Flyers Miss Opportunities, Lose 4-1 in Montreal

The Philadelphia Flyers were never really in the game tonight, as they fell to the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre by the score of 4-1. Both Brendan Gallagher and Rene Bourque had a goal and an assist, while the pair of Brian Gionta and Max Pacioretty each registered two helpers in the Canadiens’ third straight victory. Stepping in for the ill Carey Price, Peter Budaj wasn’t asked to do much, but he did stop 18 of the Flyers’ 19 shots on net for his first win in 2013. “It feels great. Our team played a great defensive game and …

Phantoms burn Devils in first, hold on for the win

Scott Munroe posted 31 saves and Rob Bordson netted the go ahead goal in the first period as the Adirondack Phantoms defeated the Albany Devils, 4-2, in front of 3,745 spectators at the Glens Falls Civic Center on Friday. Andrew Johnston and Brandon Manning each contributed a goal for the Phantoms (20-24-3) in a wild first period which saw Adirondack continuing their scoring momentum from last Sundays game against Syracuse. “It’s not easy sometimes to keep that kind of an attitude when you have that many days off,” said Phantoms head coach Terry Murray. “But I really like how overall …

Clarkson Caps Off Devils’ Comeback, Flyers Lose 5-3 in Jersey

The Philadelphia Flyers learned tonight that it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish, as they blew a two-goal lead to lose 5-3 to the New Jersey Devils tonight on the road. David Clarkson provided the game-winner for the hosts halfway through the third period, as the Devils scored four unanswered goals to win for the fifth time in their last six games. Ilya Kovalchuk recorded three assists, while Patrik Elias had a goal and two assists in the win. Martin Brodeur stopped 25 of Philly’s 28 shots and added on an assist, as Ilya Bryzgalov denied 14 of …

Czechoslovaks in a Flyers uniform – Jan Hlavac

Filip Strych is our Czech correspondent who contributes to philadelphiaflyers.cz, the following is an article from that site. This week we are going to continue our Czechoslovakian blog with Jan Hlavac, another Kladno-born player who played for the Philadelphia Flyers. Despite his short tenure with the team he will be remembered as a part of the Lindros trade to the Rangers. Jan was born on September 20, 1976 in Prague where he started his career with one of the best teams HC Sparta Prague during the 1993/1994 season. The following year, the New York Islanders chose Hlavac in the second round, 28th overall. …

Hockey Hilarity: Cechmanek-esque Salute

Friday funnies brought to you straight from hockey’s own players, media personnel, and broadcast botches. We’ll be mucking it up every week right here, examining puck ups, puns, tweets, and more! Pretty sure most people have seen this video by now, but I figured I’d do a post about it as well. Austin Krause, a goalie (well, probably former goalie now) for Farmington High School in Minnesota, purposely puts a puck into his own team’s net, and then proceeds to show the team his IQ in the form of a certain single-fingered-salute, before leaving the ice. Sure, the video is pretty …

Crashing the Crease: Has Bryzgalov Really Been Better This Season?

As we sit here in the midst of two days without Flyers hockey, let us take pause to reminisce about the old NHL: The forgotten, hazy days of yesteryear, in which teams had more than 21 hours between games, players skated on sharpened butter knives and, in one small corner of the league, an eccentric Russian goalie named Ilya Bryzgalov hitchhiked from Phoenix to Philadelphia and found a new providence, playing hockey for our boys in orange and black. This was a hopeful and optimistic time, one in which that entire City of Brotherly Love ever so quietly gazed with …

Breaking Down the Bullies: Is this the .500 life?

The Flyers have played 14 games to this point, but if we have learned anything, it is that we know nothing. A mere seven points separate fourth place (Toronto) and last place (Washington). The team has scored less than two goals on TEN separate occasions, while compiling 19 in the other four. Claude Giroux trails Kimmo Timonen in points, and Tye McGinn has the same amount of goals. They feel like a team that is struggling, but they boast a 4-1-1 record over their last six contests. Now sitting at 6-7-1 overall, is this lack of consistency going to keep …
