RICE & MICE: What’s all the fuss about deer antler spray?

The latest buzz about performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) is all about the deer antler spray. I know I’ve heard plenty of people wondering aloud what exactly deer antler spray is, followed up by wondering if something like that would actually work. Deer antler spray, also known as deer antler velvet, is a supplement made from, you guessed it, deer antlers. Male moose, elk, and deer produce and shed antlers every year as do female reindeer and caribou. When the antlers begin to grow, they are covered with a highly vascular and innervated skin, called velvet (literally because it looks and …

Ftorek’s Blast Gives Kalamazoo 2-1 OT Win Over Titans

The Trenton Titans may have outshot the visiting Kalamazoo Wings 46-27, but the hosts fell 2-1 in overtime last night at the Sun National Bank Center. Sam Ftorek had the game-winner for Kalamazoo with 1:01 left in overtime, while former Trenton Devil Joel Martin stopped 45 shots for the Wings. Brett Lysak had the opening goal for the visitors, while Jacob Cepis’ 14th of 2012-2013 was the lone goal for Trenton. Scott Wedgewood had 25 saves on 27 of the shots the Wings threw at him, as the overtime loss concluded the Titans’ 1-1-1 homestand. The decisive goal came when the …

Flyers send Hurricanes home with another Saturday loss

Danny Briere scored his second goal of the season at 1:47 of overtime as the Philadelphia Flyers sent Carolina Hurricanes home with a loss for the second straight Saturday, winning 4-3. Briere took an outlet pass from Nicklas Grossmann along the boards, crossed up the defense, and sent a wrist shot, which deflected off the far post and then off the backside of ‘Canes goalie Cam Ward and over the goal line. Ilya Bryzgalov came up huge again for the Flyers stopping 30-of-33 shots. The Flyers finished their four-game home stand with a record of 3-0-1, collecting seven of eight …

Poll: Which former Flyer is the most missed right now?

Heading into this past offseason, the Flyers two biggest free agents were Jaromir Jagr and Matt Carle. While they had discussions with both, the pursuit of Ryan Suter, Zach Parise, and Shea Weber at various times all contributed to the two ultimately accepting attractive deals with the Dallas Stars and Tampa Bay Lightning respectively. Additionally, James Van Riemsdyk was shipped to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Luke Schenn in an attempt to strengthen the blue line. After 11 games, you can make the case that the Flyers could really use all three of these players; but which is …

Ullrich’s beauty gets Titans past Royals in OT

As the threat of severe weather loomed over New Jersey’s capital on Friday night, the Reading Royals and Trenton Titans resumed their rivalry in a taut, yet low-scoring contest which featured another thrilling finish beyond regulation. Ultimately, it was Mike Ullrich’s second goal of the night, coming at the 1:40 mark of overtime, which gave the hosts a 3-2 victory over their bitter division rivals. Ullrich, who in the third period extended his point streak to nine games with a tally, accepted a Chad Langlais pass, flew up the left-wing side then deked a Reading defenseman. He pulled the puck …

Michael Pina: Welcome Claude Giroux into your home

Now let me start by admitting I’m an NBA guy. Basketball is the sun, and I’m a rocky mass orbiting it at all times. I absorb everything meaningful about the league that’s written and said aloud. I come home from work and watch at least two games every night, and if NBATV chooses to re-run the 2002 dunk contest at 2 PM on a random Wednesday, my regularly scheduled afternoon falls to pieces. So why all of a sudden write a piece about hockey? While basketball is my calling, I’ve been an unabashed bandwagon fan of the Boston Bruins since …

This time next week…

I will be in Philadelphia! Yes! I have a long weekend break from teaching and I’m heading east and north to see my best friend and be in the city of my team. I unfortunately will not be seeing a game due to the Flyers being away and general lack of money, but I don’t care. I plan to do the tourist sightseeing that I haven’t done the times I’ve been before and just enjoy being there. So, if anyone has suggestions of things I should do and see other than some of the main ones: Liberty Bell, Rocky Statue; …

Panthers get revenge and beat Flyers in a shootout

The Philadelphia Flyers were looking to extend their win streak to a season- high three games, but fell short as the Florida Panthers defeated them by a  3-2 count in a shootout on Thursday, avenging their previous meeting in which they lost 7-1 at home on January 26. Jose Theodore got the win for the Panthers, and was the first star of the game, making 30 saves on 32 shots, as well as both chances he faced in the shootout. Jack Skille and Stephen Weiss scored for the Panthers, with Dmitri Kulikov adding two assists, before Jonathon Huberdeau and Peter …
