Point/ Counterpoint : NHL 24/7

Welcome to another edition of Point/Counterpoint, where a pair of Flyers Faithful scribes square off about all things hockey related. This week, Dain S. and Jim H. will discuss the pros and cons of the HBO Winter Classic-themed show 24/7. First up, point from Jim… I hate 24/7. There, I said it! Really though, I don’t. The fact is, I could literally watch the show 24/7. Its compelling and pertains to my interests. Here’s the problem with it — I’m thinking that too much info about your heroes and rivals takes away some of the mystery of the sport. I’d …

Bettman: Let’s go splitsies

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman has baited the hook with some delicious chum, and now must wait for a shake on the line. The National Hockey League’s new proposal to break the deadlock on a new Collective Bargaining Agreeement, borne from talks which stretched into this afternoon in Toronto, includes the following as chief conciliation points: A 50-50 split in all Hockey Related Revenues No salary rollback A full 82-game schedule, to start in early November, should the NHLPA accept those terms “We very much want to preserve a full 82-game season and in that light we made a proposal, an …

The Reason I Love Sports

It was just over two weeks ago that I sat in the stands at Lincoln Financial Field and began to cry. It was not because I was sad, nor was it because my beloved Eagles were losing. I wasn’t crying because I knew hockey season was non-existent and showed no signs of resuming any time soon. The tears were like curtains upon my eyes because the Philadelphia Eagles were doing what was right and honoring the great Brian Dawkins for a career well played and life well lived. There have been hundreds of stories written about B-Dawk leading up to …

European Updates – Kladno lost to Plzen, Lev experiencing crisis

Kris Beech started his season with HC Pardubice. He was supposed to be a star, but was unable to live up those expectations and had to wait 11 games for his first goal. Finally, Beech scored against HC Kometa Brno, the leading team of the Extraliga. He was glad to have scored, because the slow start was familiar to him. Slow starts without a goal, that’s the old story every season for Kris. Now he hopes that he can be better in the upcoming games and he can produce more. One more fact about Kris: his linemate is a former …

Hockey Hilarity: Stanley Swag

Friday funnies brought to you straight from hockey’s own players and media personnel. We’ll be mucking it up every week right here, examining puck ups, puns, tweets, and more! You know, there used to be this professional hockey league called the NHL. That stands for National Hockey League. Back in the days where seasons didn’t get entirely cancelled, even if they were put on hold for nine days or postponed for a few months, there was this guy who played for this team called the Detroit Red Wings. His name was Steve Yzerman. He was one of the greatest players in …

The Phantoms player I’m most interested to follow during the lockout may surprise you

In three seasons covering the Adirondack Phantoms, only two players made me stop and say, “Wow.” Brayden Schenn and Matt Read belonged in a different league from their first shifts. Instead of rookies, they looked like 16-year-olds with forged birth certificates who faked their way into some 13-and-under house league. They were the only sure things. And you didn’t need to be a hockey genius to see it. If you asked me, however, who was the third most impressive forward I covered, I bet you’d be surprised by the answer. This time last year, Matt Ford was a third-liner for the …

La Tournée des Joueurs: A Dream for The Ladies

Ladies, if this NHL lockout is preventing you from seeing hot guys in hockey uniforms, do I have the thing for you: Max Talbot and Bruno Gervais’ La Tournee des Joueurs (The Players’ Tour), featuring the likes of Talbot, Carey Price, Kris Letang, Derrick Brassard, and the hottest hunk of all — Simon Gagne. Talbot and his BFF Gervais started this league to give back to the hockey fans in Quebec and allow them to see some of their favorite players playing, despite the lockout. But we all know the real reason the league was started — so as not …
