Flyers Sign Taylor Leier to Entry-Level Deal

(Photo courtesy of Doug Beghtel – The Oregonian) The Flyers have announced that they have come to terms on an entry-level contract with 2012 4th-round pick Taylor Leier of the WHL Portland Winterhawks. While this is the 50th contract for the Flyers it is very likely to slide along with Anthony Stolarz and Scott Laughton. Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia’s Tim Panaccio reports the contract is a 3-year deal, worth $2.56 million. He’ll be paid $853,500 per year with bonuses for games played. Leier was a member of the Memorial Cup-winning Winterhawks last year, the same team as Nashville Predators’ first-round …

Does Hal Gill have a chance to stick with the Flyers?

After being invited to training camp, does Hal Gill have a legitimate chance to stick with the Philadelphia Flyers? It adds another body to a defense corps that already had some intriguing decisions to make. From my article last week: The Flyers are currently just over $2 million over the league’s upper limit, so they will have to shed some cap space. The likely candidates are defenseman Braydon Coburn or Andrej Meszaros (or Grossmann to a lesser extent). The Flyers have nine blue-liners signed to one-way contract; and young players such as Oliver Lauridsen are knocking on the door of …

Ranking the Flyers’ Prospects: Defense

Last Monday I ranked the Flyers’ top 10 prospects at forward as I see it. You can click here to view my forward rankings. This week I rank the Flyers’ top 10 defensive prospects. Overall, I like what the Flyers have in their system on the blue line. Names such as Robert Haag and Samuel Morin stick out due to their high potential and where they were selected in the draft. Philadelphia also possesses some lesser known defenseman such as Fredrick Larsson, Maxim Lamarche, and Mark Alt that I believe could have an impact at the NHL level someday. Check …

Flyers Extend Camp Invite To Hal Gill

Defense was not a strong point for the Philadelphia Flyers last year, and today they’ve made a move in an attempt to shore up the position. Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe is reporting that the Flyers have invited Hal Gill to training camp this season. Gill, 38, spent eight years with the Bruins, before signing with Toronto in 2006 as a free agent. Gil went on to win a Stanley Cup with Pittsburgh in 2009, before signing with Montreal.  He was later traded to Nashville who used a compliance buyout on Gill for the final year of his deal. …

Hockey Hilarity: Ott-er Disaster

Friday funnies brought to you straight from hockey’s own players, media personnel, and broadcast botches. We’ll be mucking it up every week right here, examining puck ups, puns, tweets, and more! As hockey fans, one of the coolest parts of the game is the sweater. Hockey jerseys are just so cool. The only cooler piece of equipment is the goalie mask, but I digress… The subject of this week’s hockey hilarity is the massive misstep made by a franchise with a pretty rad logo. The Buffalo Sabres have a dope color scheme and a killer logo… But then they go and …
