Jagr and Giroux

European Updates: Giroux, Lev and Rytiri

There is a lot of ground to cover in today’s European Updates. The Extraliga as well as HC Lev Praha has remained important for this week, but today, something special happened – news broke that Claude Giroux has been thinking about signing with HC Rytiri Kladno. Let’s start from the beginning. Tuukka Rask came to HC Skoda Plzen. The Boston Bruins goaltender signed with Plzen last week and played his first game against struggling Sparta. It wasn’t an easy match for Rask’s new team. They were leading 4-1 when David Koci and Ryan Hollweg started to fight. (You can watch …

Point/Counterpoint: Shut up and do something!

Welcome to another edition of Point/Counterpoint, where a pair of Flyers Faithful scribes square off, debating an issue with their own unique style and flair. This week, Bob H and Nick D find some common ground, though with different voices, over how we should feel now that the NHL is in the throes of another lockout. Point, Nick: I grew up watching hockey. This city became enamored with the way the Broad Street Bullies played the game: grind it out, blue-collar, arrive in ill-humor type stuff. They won by outworking other teams. It is an incredible spectacle. Even now, with much of …

I don't know why, but it seems like Barry Melrose is a natural for KHL broadcasts

KHL 2Nite

Good news hockey fans, ESPN is jumping back into the hockey game! Well, no, the lockout isn’t over and NBC still has the NHL’s rights. ESPN will actually be showing KHL games this season. It’s an interesting move for a number of reasons. Hockey and ESPN have a history, to say the least. The network dropped the sport when the NHL was locked out back in 2004-05. ESPN attempted to bring it back when the TV rights were available last year, but the NHL decided to stay with NBC. I supported the league’s decision to stick with NBC. ESPN had …

CBA 101: Why isn’t Matt Read playing with the Phantoms?

I’ve opened up CBA 101 to mailbag questions as I had more or less covered the critical topics with respect to the, now expired, Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). I had received a question about NHL player eligibility for the AHL during the lockout from reader Will Heineman, and then more specifically, from reader Tom Ciaverelli, “why isn’t Matt Read playing with the Phantoms?” The answer ultimately comes back to waiver eligibility, which I covered in my very first CBA 101 article. Without re-hashing the entire contents of my article on waiver eligibility, the crux of the topic comes down to A) when a player …

The NHL’s Day of Atonement

In case you missed it, the Jewish Holiday Yom Kippur passed on Tuesday night. As many of you know, I am Jewish. On Yom Kippur, my fellow Jews and I sit in synagogue, fast, and pray for atonement for our sins for the past year. Furthermore, we, as a people and individually need to apologize to those we have hurt. Yom Kippur got me thinking not just about who I may have caused harm to (namely my fantastic editor Kim Pollock with the random times I e-mail her my weekly piece), but what I would be apologizing for if I …

Hockey Hilarity: Banned Beards

Friday funnies brought to you straight from hockey’s own players and media personnel. We’ll be mucking it up every week right here, examining puck ups, puns, tweets, and more! A little over a week ago, Claude Giroux sent out a tweet that he and Scott Hartnell would be growing beards during the lockout, presumably until the ban on National Hockey League hockey is lifted. This just further reaffirms the notion that hockey players will grow beards at any given point in time for any reason at all, and it’s awesome. Here’s what usually, but currently not, professional NHL players Claude Giroux, Scott Hartnell, Mike Richards, …
