Dazzlers and Duds: Pronger v. Desjardins and Carcillo v. Briere

Several weeks back, we asked our beloved Twitter followers who were their most loved and hated Flyers of the past decade. It led to some great names and some great discussion. Well it got us thinking. In the doldrums that is August in the hockey world — not to mention the impending doom of a lockout —  we decided to put together a tournament; poll style! We’ve compiled the responses for both the Loved and Hated categories, and seeded them according to our whims and wishes. What you see before you is the result of our efforts. While we may …

CBA 101: The Bonus Cushion and Bonus Overages

One aspect of the upcoming  (It is coming right? Eventually?) new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) that I am particularly interested about is the concept of Bonus Cushions and Bonus Overages. I’ve seen a number of people assume that the Bonus Cushion will exist, because it has before and, well, why wouldn’t it? I’ve also seen a seemingly equal number of people that don’t believe it will be included. Cue, the mumbo jumbo Section 50.5(h): (h) Accounting for Performance Bonuses. No SPC may contain Performance Bonuses except in accordance with Section 50.2(b)(i)(C) above. For purposes of a Club’s Upper Limit and Lower Limit, as …

NHL and NHLPA Playing a Dangerous Game

I’ve tried my hardest to not discuss the potential NHL lockout. Now that it looms, I’ll tell you why I refused to make any mention of the lockout in my articles. For one, I don’t fully understand what the owners and players are thinking. I do understand that it all come down to money. What I mean is, how could the NHL and NHLPA allow their situation to get like this? Did they not learn from the NBA’s lockout last year? Secondly, I’ve refused to let myself get enraptured by the possibility of a lockout. Meaning, I’ve barely read any …

The Hit List

The National Hockey League is on the verge of a third work stoppage in the last 18 years, all under the watch of Commissioner Gary Bettman. With two weeks left before the whole thing blows up and we go from wishing things would work out to grabbing our calendars and figuring out how much of the season will be lost, Bob H and Nick D got together to discuss ways the NHL could skirt impending disaster — and it has nothing to do with working it all out within the current system. First up, Bob…When things looked awfully bleak around …

Reviewing the Good

At the moment, I’m making my way through The Good, the Bad & the Ugly Philadelphia Flyers: Heart-pounding, Jaw-dropping, and Gut-wrenching Moments from Philadelphia Flyers History by NHL.com correspondent and former Philly-area beat writer Adam Kimelman. Right now, it’s all good. Stanley Cups, Broad Street Bullies, the Spectrum. The book reads more like a story than others I’ve read which makes it (to me) easier to digest. I do wish there were pictures of each of the players they mention because well, there’s a lot of names. But the beginnings of the Philadelphia Flyers has a lot of charm and obstacles …

Hockey Hilarity: Ginger… Snap!

Friday funnies brought to you straight from hockey’s own players and media personnel. We’ll be mucking it up every week right here, examining puck ups, puns, tweets, and more! Claude Giroux’s breakout season this year was rewarded by an overwhelming show of fan support as he was voted to be the cover athlete for EA Sports’ NHL ’13. It’s a pretty cool thing and cements the Hearst, Ontario native as one of the top young stars in the league. But what all that talent and all those votes can’t change is a single, undeniable truth: Claude Giroux is a ginger. It’s …

CBA Chatter

Everything you wanted to know about the CBA but were afraid to ask Here are your updates from the past week on the ongoing collective bargaining agreement talks from around the Web. Well, time is ticking away and the owners and players are slowly moving towards common ground. Will a lockout be averted?[Hockeybuzz] [Puck Daddy] On Tuesday, the two sides met briefly and agreed to meet on Wednesday. On Wednesday, the NHL gave the players a new proposal to mull over and the NHLPA is reading it through. [Kuklas Korner] [Sports Illustrated] [CSN Philly] [USA Today] There is supposed to be a …

NHL releases season sked; Flyers featured aplenty

Pretending as if nothing were to happen with the Collective Bargaining Agreement talks or placing faith that the start of the 2012-13 season will commence and complete in uninterrupted fashion, the National Hockey League issued its season television schedule for North America on Thursday. As it has been for many seasons in the past, the Flyers provide an attractive national presence (thanks, Comcast ownership!), and are set to be featured on American television a whopping 25 times. Lockout Lamentations

One of the things that I love most about living in Philadelphia is the instant bond you form with someone when you discover you’re both fans of a particular team, or player. I love that no matter where you go, you can strike up a conversation about local sports with a stranger and feel like you’re talking to an old friend. I always smile when I catch someone wearing a Flyers shirt, especially in the middle of the summer, when hockey is only on the minds of few. The idea of losing Flyers hockey for a season is a pretty …
