Suter, Parise on Flyers’ radar

Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer has revealed a source which says the Flyers have extended 10-year contracts to free agents Ryan Suter and Zach Parise. Those offers have been confirmed by Tim Panaccio and SportsNet’s Nick Kypreos, who wrote that the overtures were in the neighborhood north of $80 million over 12 years. In other ex-Flyers news, Arron Asham has come to terms with the New York Rangers on a two-year deal. That means Asham has completed the Grand Slam within the Atlantic Division, having been signed by all five clubs within.

Flyers re-sign Leighton

The Flyers have made it official, re-signing goaltender Michael Leighton to back up Ilya Bryzgalov on Sunday afternoon. The deal is for one year, $900k. This should sum up both the contract and the reactions to it: Leighton has exactly one game of NHL experience since Game 6 of the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals, an unsteady 7-4 victory in Los Angeles on December 30, 2010. “I’m very happy to be back in Philly,” Leighton said upon the announcement. “This is where I want to be and I’m excited about the team we have this year. I look forward to the …

The Lindros deal: 20 years later

Nobody can ever accuse Ed Snider of not doing everything he can to try and get the Flyers, his baby and lasting legacy, another Stanley Cup. There are many out there who experience Snider as he is now, Uncle Ed living in Malibu, in his later years at turns avuncular and apoplectic in the public eye, now that the Orange and Black have succeeded in keeping up the veneer of a winning club that sometimes gets a fleeting whiff of glory. You’d think he really swung his manhood around by influencing the madness of last June, but there was a …

Repressed Hockey Memories: Putting the “Fan” in Fantasy

I’ll admit it. There’s a veteran Flyer that none have you have ever heard of. A grizzled, career-worn player in the mold of a Mark Recchi, looking to hoist a cup before he retires. You most likely haven’t heard of him because that player is me. I’ve always had a very good imagination.  The woods surrounding my neighborhood were Tatooine, Dagobah, and Endor all rolled into one and I silently fought the forces of evil until justice prevailed or it was time for dinner. Maybe for some, this fantasy play dies along with childhood but luckily for me, I can’t …

Terry Murray speaks 6/29/12

Shortly after his re-hiring back into the Flyers organization on Friday, Terry Murray gave some brief thoughts. Below is the full transcript, courtesy of the club: Q: After all your time in the NHL, what made this job attractive to you? “Well, I got a call from Paul Holmgren before the draft.  We made a commitment over the phone to do this.  There wasn’t a lot of stuff coming in from the NHL teams after I got fired in LA.  The phone rings for about four or five days and then it goes silent, and there was nothing up until …

Murray named Phantoms head coach; Laperriere to Flyers front office

As had been rumored as far back as last week, the Flyers made it official on Friday, naming former player/assistant/scout/head coach Terry Murray the head coach of the Adirondack Phantoms. “We feel very fortunate to be able to bring Terry back to the Flyers organization as head coach of the Phantoms,” Flyers GM Paul Holmgren said.  “Terry brings a wealth of knowledge and experience, is an excellent teacher and a strong believer in the development process of young players.” “I really appreciate the opportunity to come back to the Flyers organization and I’m really looking forward to the challenge that’s …

shoe skate

Well, that wasn’t too bad (on ice with the Southern girl)

Forgive the quality of these photos. My dad was in town and the man has a non-smart phone. I’m not sure how he survives. But a thank you to him for taking pictures of this almost historical event. On Tuesday, I went to an adult skating class (that sounds far more inappropriate than it should). I have to be honest, I was terrified. I’m sure it was more anticipation of falling and possible broken bones that was adding to the terror. I’m not a risk-taker by nature. Not in regards to anything athletic. So, I went up to the desk …

Five Questions: Parise and/or Suter?

Flyers Faithful is pleased to have Adam Kimelman of NHL.com, Marc Siciliano of Kukla’s Corner, Dan MacNeal of Crimespree Hockey, James Minger of Flyers-Philia, and Flyers Faithful’s own Kevin Christmann participate in the current iteration of Five Questions. This is the fifth of a five-part series focusing on Free Agency that will run all week. Do you see the Flyers as major players for one or both of Zach Parise and Ryan Suter? (note: our participants’ answers were captured prior to the JVR trade.) Adam Kimelman: I think with the Flyers’ biggest need being on defense, I think they will be major players for Suter. If they lose out on him, I think they …

My Favorite Girl Group

This may be a repeat for some of you, but in light of recent events (Jordan Staal being traded, Spice Girls reunion), I thought it was appropriate to share again. The Lulz feature was originally inspired by the lolcats site but features hockey pictures with funny, quirky, ironic or just plain mean captions. This feature should run weekly on Fridays; TGIFWL (Thank Goodness It’s Friday With Lulz).
