Let’s Make a Deal: Harry Z heads to Anaheim

If there’s one thing we can count on as the trade deadline approaches, it’s that Paul Holmgren will more often than not seek out, and consummate, a deal with a favorable Western Conference trading partner. This time, it’s the Anaheim Ducks. The Flyers made the move official on Monday evening, shipping Harry Zolnierczyk to Orange County for Jay Rosehill. Zolnierczyk, who played collegiate hockey at Brown, totaled one assist in seven games for the Flyers this season, along with nine goals and 17 points over 52 games for Adirondack. Rumor mill: Dan Boyle and, yet again, Bobby Ryan

The most glaring hole on this Philadelphia Flyers roster is the lack of a true number one defenseman.  According to Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal and Tim Panaccio of, Dan Boyle is on the trade block and the Philadelphia Flyers are interested. “If, however, the San Jose Sharks are willing to trade the 36-year-old Boyle, who has a year left on his six-year, $40 million contract with a whopping $6.6 million cap hit, the Flyers have interest” Panaccio wrote. Report: Flyers to break bank over Giroux extension

According to John Boruk, host over at Comcast SportsNet Philly, the Flyers are about to go all in on captain Claude Giroux. His tweet from Monday: “You can draw up the contract right now, but Giroux will get 71-72 million over 8 years. It’s just a matter of when it gets done.” Giroux has struggled during this truncated season, his first as team captain following a breakout 93-point performance in a full campaign last year. The Gagarin Cup Playoffs: KHL Postseason Starts Today

The KHL playoffs start today, as 16 of the league’s 26 clubs compete for the Gagarin Cup. Since the NHL and KHL are huge competitors, it’s interesting to look at the players on the current KHL playoff teams to see just how many are former Philadelphia Flyers or NHLers. On top of that, some clubs’ prospects are in the 16-team field.
