Matt Carle. Matt Walker. Andrej Meszaros. Pavel Kubina. What do these men have in common? Yes, they all play for the Flyers. Yes, they are all defensemen. Yes, the Flyers paid a hefty price to acquire all four. Those acquisitions are what I would like to explore. The Flyers acquired Carle in 2009 from the Tampa Bay Lightning for infamous winger Steve Downie, defenseman Steve Eminger, and Tampa Bay’s own fourth-round pick, snagged Walker in a surprise July, 2010 deal for Simon Gagne, picked up Meszaros a short time afterwards for the Flyers’ 2012 second-round pick. Although they came out with more energy and effort, the Philadelphia Flyers fell to the Devils for a fourth straight game with a 3-1 defeat at the Wells Fargo Center tonight in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals, ending one of the most interesting playoffs in recent memory. New Jersey now awaits the winner of the Rangers/Caps series and will begin the Eastern Conference Finals some time next week. A step in the right direction on the road to recovery. This could be huge for the Flyers. James van Riemsdyk is nearing a return from the fractured bone in his foot. Likely, he will have missed a total of 19 regular season games, along with the first 4 games of the 1st round of the playoffs. Van Riemsdyk originally fractured the foot while blocking a shot on March 1and had surgery to fix the fractured area with a plate on March 6th. At that time, it was estimated that he would miss 4-to-6 weeks. After seeing the doctor early …

The first three injuries are those that are not expected to come back this season. Blair Betts has missed the entire season with a knee injury. From the sounds of things, he will likely not return to the Flyers or the NHL. Ian Laperriere has also missed the entire season and will not likely return to playing. Chris Pronger is out for the season with post concussion syndrome. After hearing that Pronger was struggling so much with the post concussion syndrome, his presence at the Flyers playoff clinching game is a good sign that he’s possibly feeling better. Then again, …

A dominant win over the New York Islanders and a pair of comebacks helped the Flyers gain five crucial points in the standings this week, as Philly still has a slim chance to win the Eastern Conference. Unfortunately, the only game in which the Flyers didn’t earn a point may have been their most impressive performance, as they posted 23 more shots than the Panthers in their one-goal game loss last night. The Flyers dominated the Florida Panthers tonight at the Wells Fargo Center for a 5-0 win, which extend their winning streak to four games. Ilya Bryzgalov had another amazing performance, as he made 28 saves for his second shutout in a three-game span. Bryzgalov’s fourth shutout of the season came without the help of defensemen Kimmo Timonen, Andrej Meszaros, and Pavel Kubina. Bryzgalov earned the first star of the game and it was clearly deserved. For the first time in awhile, the Flyers put together a string of wins this week, as they won all three of their contests. Ilya Bryzgalov played a big part in the team’s success, as he won all three games with a save percentage of .948. With a four-game schedule ahead for the next seven days, hopefully Bryzgalov can keep Philly’s winning ways intact against some strong opponents. Ilya Bryzgalov had his strongest performance of the season tonight, as he stopped 34 saves to help the Flyers beat the Washington Capitals 1-0 at the Verizon Center. Eric Wellwood’s second goal of the season was all Bryzgalov needed for his third shutout of 2011-2012, as the Flyers won back-to-back games for the first time since the middle of January. The game-winning goal, which came at the 7:51 mark of the second period, was a redirection from Wellwood in the slot off of a pass from Pavel Kubina at the point.
