Mistakes cost Flyers in Carolina, fall 2-1

For the second time in two days, the Philadelphia Flyers were outworked by the opposition, as the Carolina Hurricanes grabbed a 2-1 victory at home. It was a Radek Dvorak goal in the second period that proved to be a game-winner, as Jay Harrison also scored for the hosts. Luke Schenn was the only member of Philly to beat Anton Khudobin on the evening, as the former Boston Bruin stopped 17 of the Flyers’ 18 shots. Through three games, the Flyers have a total of three goals, one of which has come at even strength. “I don’t know if anything’s …

A look at the goaltending market this offseason

With the trade of Jonathan Bernier to the Toronto Maple Leafs the Flyers lost out on a goaltender that I am personally a very big fan of. I think that Bernier is the real deal, and I would have loved to have been able to acquire him. Naturally, if that acquisition were to have happened, an Ilya Bryzgalov compliance buyout would have been inevitable. I am in favor of buying out Bryzgalov simply because of his contract. I’m a numbers and salary cap guy and I think it is absolutely crucial that he leave. While the Flyers could wait another …

Then and Now: Nikolay Zherdev

Many of the biggest names in today’s NHL were selected in the first round of the 2003 draft. After Marc-Andre Fleury, Eric Staal, and Nathan Horton were picked with the first three overall picks, the Columbus Blue Jackets picked Nikolay Zherdev. Thomas Vanek, Milan Michalek, and Ryan Suter were the next three players to be picked after Zherdev, as the group of Braydon Coburn, Dion Phaneuf, Jeff Carter, Dustin Brown, Brent Seabrook, Zach Parise, Ryan Getzlaf, Brent Burns, Ryan Kesler, Mike Richards, Brian Boyle, and Corey Perry were also taken in the opening round of the draft 10 years ago. …

Hockey Hilarity: Oliver Lauridsen, from Anton Khudobin and Zdeno Chara?

Friday funnies brought to you straight from hockey’s own players, media personnel, and broadcast botches. We’ll be mucking it up every week right here, examining puck ups, puns, tweets, and more! Hopefully everyone watched the Philadelphia Flyers-Boston Bruins game this past week. It was a good game, there was a wonderful opening ceremony before puck drop, a lot of money was raised at the game for victims of the Boston Marathon via the 50/50 drawing, and the Flyers won! Surprised? Me too. Everyone was in a giving mood that night as Oliver Lauridsen treated fans to his first NHL goal, with some …

Flyers Give Second Strong Effort in a Row, Win 5-2 over Boston

With a little help from an unexpected source, the Philadelphia Flyers won 5-2 over the Boston Bruins on Tuesday night, their second strong effort in a row — despite being out of playoff contention. Oliver Lauridsen scored his first NHL goal 11:31 into the second period, with some help from Boston’s Zdeno Chara. Lauridsen dumped the puck into the Bruins’ end, where Chara attempted to throw it back around the boards. Unfortunately for Boston, the puck rolled into the crease, hit goaltender Anton Khudobin’s stick, and went into the net. Steve Mason looked terrific between the pipes, coming up with …
