Frequent Flyer Miles: Manning to stay in Philly, Zherdev on the move again, Picard to Austria

The biggest news in terms of current and past Philadelphia Flyers is the signing of Brandon Manning to a one-year deal. The blue liner has appeared in 10 games for the Orange and Black over the last two seasons, as well as 111 games for the Adirondack Phantoms. He has two assists and a plus-5 rating in the NHL and 12 goals with 28 assists, as well as 216 PIMs, in the AHL. Manning will come with a cap hit of $675,000 next season. As for former Flyers, Nikolay Zherdev is making his third appearance in Frequent Flyer Miles, as he …

Flyers sit at 49 contracts with decisions to make; intriguing training camp battles

With the recent signing of restricted free agent Brandon Manning, the Philadelphia Flyers now sit at 49 contracts on the 50 contract reserve limit. Two of those contracts could slide, meaning they would not count towards the 50 contract limit, if Laughton or Stolarz are sent back to Juniors (a likelihood for the latter). The Flyers are currently just over $2 million over the league’s upper limit, so they will have to shed some cap space. The likely candidates are defenseman Braydon Coburn or Andrej Meszaros (or Grossmann to a lesser extent). The Flyers have nine blue-liners signed to one-way contract; …

The Escape Goat

BRAYDON COBURN walks into PAUL HOLMGREN’S office. He meets with Holmgren and Flyers coach PETER LAVIOLETTE.   HOLMER Take a seat, Braydon. COBURN What’s going on, fellas? HOLMER As you know, we recently bought out Danny Briere and Ilya Bryzgalov.   Laviolette picks up and throws a lamp from the table next to him.   LAVY Friggin Bryzgalov! HOLMER As you can see, Peter’s still a little upset with Bryz… LAVY You’re damn right I am! HOLMER Anyway…we wanted to discuss assigning you a new role for the upcoming season. COBURN Oh wow, are you guys going to make me …

You might remember this guy from such roles as Flyers 2013 defenseman

The (positive) outlook on defense

It is unlikely that this offseason will feature more than two big moves on defense for the Flyers. There will be no Keith Yandle, Alex Pietrangelo or Shea Weber patrolling Philadelphia’s blue line. The Flyers have been interested in Yandle for a few years now and they finally managed to get him. Well, not him. They go Mark Streit and he’s kind of like Yandle. They both have the same cap hit and both put up nearly the same amount of points in the last two seasons (Streit had 74 points and Yandle had 73). Streit may be older but he …

2013 Flyers first round pick, Samuel Morin

Draft day creates more questions than it answers for the Flyers

Coming into yesterday’s draft, it was clear that the Flyers needed to stock up on prospects as a whole and specifically defensemen. In that regard, the team accomplished their mission. However, the moves that they made — as well as ones that they did not — result in some unanswered questions. Shortly before the Flyers were on the clock to make their first round pick, it was announced that the Devils acquired Vancouver’s supposed starter of the future, Cory Schneider, for the 9th overall pick. If the Flyers have been linked to Jonathan Bernier, Jaroslav Halak, and just about every …
